Overview
Performs intermediate protective service work involving a variety of law enforcement or special duty police assignments. Work is performed under emergency conditions and involves personal hazard. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Police Supervisor.
Salary Ranges (Police Officer I-III)Level I: $54,270 - $66,209
Level II: $56,983 - $69,520
Level III: $59,832 - $72,995
Candidates will be considered for all above listed ranges depending on qualifications.
This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires balancing, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly;
hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities;
the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, and extreme heat. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
- Respond to emergency police situations; drive or walk to observe illegal or suspicious activities; affect arrests and maintain law and order; provide assistance to the public; undertake special assignments.
- Operate a patrol vehicle, ride a bicycle or walk to observe for violations of traffic laws, suspicious activities or persons, and disturbances of law and order.
- Respond to radio dispatches and answer calls and complaints.
- Issue citations for traffic violations and investigate traffic accidents.
- Provide traffic control at intersections.
- Serve warrants and make arrests, maintain warrant records, testify in court.
- Provide police escorts, direct traffic; perform residential and commercial checks.
- Fill out arrest records; complete incident reports.
- MAY serve as an investigator, a community police officer, DARE officer, patrol officer, crime prevention officer or be assigned to other law enforcement, support or special duty.
- Set up programs and serve on committees to bring community resources to facilitate crime reduction.
- Establish classes and programs to meet specific neighborhood needs.
- Secure crime scenes; gather and safeguard evidence; dust for fingerprints; interview witnesses and victims.
- Teach fourth and fifth grade students about drug awareness and dangers of substance abuse.
- Chaperone school dances and events; give presentations to school faculty, parents, PTA groups and community organizations.
- Act as crime prevention officer; act as liaison with neighborhood watch groups.
- Provide crime prevention presentations to neighborhood groups and businesses.
- Prepare detailed reports on activities and assignments; prepare incident and complaint reports.
- Participate in a variety of in-service training programs.
- Perform related tasks as required.
- Must currently be a Certified Law Enforcement Officer.
- Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
- Must meet and maintain minimum training requirements for the position established by the department and the State of North Carolina.
- General knowledge of police methods, practices and procedures; general knowledge of the geography of the town and location of important buildings; general knowledge of the rules and regulations of the department.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear reports.
- Ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances.
- Skill in the use of firearms and the operation of a motor vehicle.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
