Overview

Parks and Natural Resources Worker. Division:
Parks and Natural Resources.

Reports to:

Park Maintenance Foreman. FLSA Status:
Seasonal, Part-time, Starting at $14/hour.

Purpose Of Position:
The purpose of this part-time, seasonal position is to perform work functions associated with grounds keeping and general maintenance tasks at Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation properties during the summer season. Responsibilities also include custodial duties.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with general maintenance tasks on Carmel Clay Parks & Recreation grounds, trails, prairies, wetlands, woodland areas, restrooms, picnic shelters, playgrounds, and parking lots by performing manual work tasks. These tasks may include:
    • Cutting limbs, removing fallen trees, pruning, trimming, mulching, blowing and raking leaves and debris
    • Removing invasive or undesirable vegetation from managed areas
    • Clearing access areas on trails, paths, and parking lots using loppers, gas powered trimmers and blowers
    • Mixing and applying herbicides
    • Planting and watering shrubs and trees
    • Maintaining parking areas and driveways
    • Repairing shelters, painting, changing light bulbs, installing and maintaining signs
    • Monitoring and removing discarded trash, litter, and waste throughout the parks
    • Periodic cleaning of restroom building, picnic shelters, and other facilities
    • Patching and crack filling asphalt surfaces
    • Monitoring and reporting safety concerns resulting from storm events or unforeseen circumstances
    • Maintaining equipment and tools to keep them in operable condition
    • Reporting faulty equipment
    • Operating vehicles and equipment used in park maintenance such as trucks and UTVs
    • Using precautionary safety equipment and monitoring the work environment to ensure safety of other employees, volunteers, and the public
    • Comply with all codes, laws, rules, regulations, standards, policies and procedures
    • Perform other related duties as required
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
  • Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Ability to use technology tools such as tablets and smart devices
  • Ability to maintain prompt and regular attendance
  • Ability to use and be exposed to various cleaning agents, aerosols, and liquids
  • Ability to work in crowded trail environment and interruptions while being cautious of approaching users
  • Ability to interact and communicate in a positive, professional manner with team and public
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle to conduct work activities
  • Ability to operate a variety of tools associated with park maintenance operations such as a blower, mower, hedge trimmer, pruning shears, shovel, rake and hand tools
  • Ability to exert heavy physical effort necessary to perform certain park maintenance tasks, involving climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials weighing 20-90 pounds
  • Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, dead animals, toxic agents, disease or pathogenic substances
Qualifications Required To Perform Essential Job Functions
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this position
  • Driving is an essential function of this position and individual must possess and maintain a valid Indiana driver’s license and be insurable
