Position Summary

The position is responsible for serving as the designated staff executive and managing all aspects of assigned groups within the Chemical Products and Technology (CPT) division, including directing administrative, technical, advocacy and planning services. The position will provide support for and manage specific CPT groups and consortia. The position works closely with key internal and external stakeholders and coordinates across ACC on key cross-cutting policy issues.

This position reports directly to the Senior Director, CPT.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Leads groups and consortia of member company representatives to build consensus relative to the development and implementation of strategic goals and objectives.
  • Directs development, implementation and accomplishment of annual priorities for assigned CPT groups, including identifying new initiatives to meet group needs.
  • Implements for assigned groups appropriate governance structures and requirements consistent with American Chemistry Council (ACC) policies and association management best practices.
  • Directs development and management of annual budget and long-term financial plans for assigned groups, including development of appropriate dues/cost allocations that are consistent with ACC anti-trust and competitiveness policies, tracking of revenue and expenses, providing financial reports to members, recommending appropriate consultants, preparing requests for proposals, managing contract bids and negotiations and serving as project/contract manager.
  • Monitors and maintains a full, integrated understanding of regulations, legislation, legal proceedings and market activities affecting or potentially affecting assigned groups.
  • Provides expertise and strategic direction on priority issues, including the development of advocacy positions, strategies and tactics and providing antitrust counseling, in consultation with ACC legal counsel.
  • Prepares technical and policy materials to support assigned groups’ goals and objectives and manages the development of education and communication vehicles, such as press releases, white papers, brochures and product stewardship and scientific publications.
  • Serves as an external spokesperson and issue expert for assigned groups, presenting at policy and scientific conferences and speaking to trade and national press outlets as needed.
  • Cultivates and coordinates coalitions of national and regional industry groups, downstream users, allies and other stakeholders to support assigned groups’ goals and objectives.
  • Advises and assists groups in funding and implementation of research programs, including providing technical assistance in protocol development, monitoring, auditing and communication of results, in accordance with relevant ACC policies and procedures.
  • Works with internal ACC issue teams and support functions (e.g., Finance, Information Technology, Legal, Communications, Regulatory and Technical Affairs, State and Federal Affairs, and Political Mobilization) to ensure optimal customer service and satisfaction for assigned groups.
  • Develops and implements outreach and marketing plans for increasing the membership of assigned groups.
  • Directs the daily work activities of assigned staff (if applicable), including establishing performance objectives, conducting performance reviews and facilitating employee development.
  • Attends relevant industry conferences, forums, round tables, etc. as deemed appropriate.

Qualifications and Requirements

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., public policy, technical/science, legal).
  • 8 years project/issue management experience or relevant experience.
  • 3 years of advocacy or related experience with a business, trade, political or policy advocacy organization.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of chemical or related industry and the relevant regulatory environment.
  • Experience managing issues and programs for clients with a strong customer service focus.
  • Experience with managing and facilitating groups to identify priorities and achieve shared goals and objectives.
