Senior Accountant

Overview

The primary responsibilities for the Senior Accountant will include daily and monthly accounting for multiple entities rolling up to Merchants Bancorp. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing and recording daily financial activity with accuracy and consistency. Core responsibilities include reconciling bank accounts and other ledger balances, preparing clear summaries of transactional activity, and investigating discrepancies or issues as they arise.

Success in this role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively with team members as well as colleagues across other departments. In addition to day-to-day accounting duties, the candidate will contribute to ongoing process improvement efforts by identifying control gaps, recommending enhancements, and supporting the implementation of more efficient workflows. A proactive mindset and the ability to provide thoughtful insight into operational improvements are essential.

• Preparing and analyzing monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
• Day-to-day and month-end journal entries
• Daily balancing and monthly account reconciliations
• Accounts payable coding and submissions
• Monthly, quarterly and annual payroll commission calculations
• Expense tracking, income and expense variance analysis
• Ensuring compliance with GAAP, regulatory requirements, and company policies
• Supporting external and internal audits
• Identifying opportunities for process improvements to enhance efficiency and accuracy
• Overtime may be expected during month and quarter close

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance or related field
• 4+ years of prior accounting experience
• Relevant work experience in banking, real estate or LIHTC programs
• Experience with processing employee compensation
• Microsoft Suite – prior use of and strength in Excel in particular
• Flexibility, Professionalism, and Attention to Detail are all critical qualities
