Overview
Position: Lead Payroll Officer
Job Location: Head Office (SA31 2NF
) with occasional travel to our services across South Wales and hybrid working.
Employment Type: Full-time, 40 Hours per week
Base Salary: £35,000 - £40,000 Per Annum
Essentials: We are looking for an experienced Lead Payroll Officer to join our Finance team at M&D Care, supporting the accurate and timely processing of payroll for approximately 650 employees. This role is a key link between HR, Finance, and our wider workforce, ensuring compliance with UK legislation while delivering excellent service to managers and employees. Our organisation is entering an exciting period of growth, and this role brings an opportunity to help shape the future of our Payroll department.
Responsibilities- Prepare and process monthly and ad-hoc payroll cycles
- Calculate wages, overtime, bonuses, deductions, and statutory payments (PAYE, NIC, pensions)
- Ensure compliance with HMRC requirements including RTI submissions and year-end reporting
- Maintain accurate payroll systems and employee records
- Manage new starters, leavers, and contractual changes (including P45s and P60s)
- Respond to payroll queries from employees and managers
- Produce General Ledger files for import into Sage 200
- Provide explanations and analysis for key payroll changes between accounting periods
- Assist with audits and provide reports to Finance and HR
- Support pension auto-enrolment and benefits administration
- Support Early Pay administration
- Contribute to projects and system improvements
- Minimum 23 years experience in payroll processing
- GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths
- Payroll-related qualifications advantageous
- CIPP qualification (or similar) desirable
- Strong numerical and analytical ability
- Knowledge of UK payroll legislation and statutory requirements
- Experience processing payroll in a fast-paced environment
- High attention to detail and commitment to confidentiality
- Ability to work independently and manage deadlines
- Strong communication skills for handling internal and external queries
- Proficiency in payroll systems (ideally Dayforce) and Microsoft Excel
- CIPP or similar professional certification
- At least 23 years payroll processing experience
- Experience managing payroll volumes and deadlines
- Experience using payroll systems (Dayforce desirable)
- Strong Excel capability
- Experience working in the social care sector
- Involvement in payroll-related projects or system implementations
