Communications Operator II
Please note: This is a LATERAL opportunity that requires previous experience as a 911 public safety dispatcher.

For an inside look at the Carlsbad (CA) Police Department,
Under general direction, this position will receive, evaluate, and act upon emergency and non-emergency calls, supporting municipal law enforcement and fire departments. Responsibilities include performing complex clerical and emergency tasks, working under general supervision, and supporting police and fire department operations.

Selection Process- Receive and dispatch police, fire, and medical units via telephone, radio, and computer systems.
- Perform multiple tasks simultaneously, including documentation and information retrieval from computer systems.
- Accurately document facts during emergency calls.
- Coordinate activities within city departments and with other agencies.
- Monitor radio frequencies and dispatch appropriate units.
- Handle reports, complaints, and service requests over the phone and in person.
- Provide high-quality, courteous service to the public and external agencies.
- Assist in training and supervising less experienced personnel.
- Use computer terminals to access local, state, and national databases.
- Perform routine maintenance of dispatch equipment.
Knowledge of:
- Municipal police and fire department functions.
- 911 emergency system operations.
- City geography and surrounding areas.
- Emergency communication and dispatch practices.
Ability to:
- Effectively elicit and explain information.

- Operate radio, telephone, and computer equipment efficiently.

One year of operational experience in public safety performing duties comparable to those of a Communication Operator I is required.
Possession of a Police Officer Standards of Training (P.O.S.T) Basic Complaint/Dispatcher Certificate is required. Experience with Computer Aided Dispatch (C.A.D.) is preferred but not mandatory.
Ability to keyboard/type at a minimum speed of 40 words per minute.
This position operates on a 24/7 rotating schedule, including holidays and weekends.
