. Telent is looking for a trainee to join our Traffic Signals / Traffic Lighting specialists in the Carlisle area. Due to growth we will expand the traffic team. This is a field‑based role – the successful applicant must hold a full UK driving licence and be prepared to travel across the region and work in all‑weather conditions.

What you’ll doAs a trainee within our Traffic Signals team, you will work closely with an experienced Traffic Engineer to install, maintain and test traffic signals and traffic lighting units, alongside all electrical components and equipment in the Carlisle region.
Training blends classroom, desk‑based and online learning, progressing towards an NVQ Level 2 in Highways Electrical Installations (LANTRA), then NVQ Level 3, and sector certifications such as ECS and the National Highways Sector Scheme (NHSS) Chapter 8.
Who you areYou have an interest in field‑based engineering and preferably some exposure to electrical installations—working with equipment, lighting, controllers, detection boxes or a college course experience. If you have no experience, we encourage you to apply.
Key requirements and behaviours- Motivation and willingness to learn through on‑the‑job and online learning
- Previous experience of electrical installations or a holder of an electrical course/diploma or similar
- Ability to problem‑solve and provide ideas – think outside the box and work through fault‑finding instructions and specifications
- Hold a full UK driving licence
- Good communication skills and ability to use a tablet/computer
- Willingness to undertake a drugs and alcohol test to ensure compliance
