Job SummaryApplications are welcomed for a consultant post in Otolaryngology in a trust with a wide case mix in a spectacular part of the UK. The successful applicant will join a team of dedicated ENT surgeons working in harmony to provide excellent patient care. Areas of special interest will be welcomed, particularly head & neck & otology.
On‑call duties: 1 in 5 on call. Attendance required at the monthly ENT meetings incorporating governance, morbidity and mortality and education.
This is a replacement post, as a result of the planned retirement of one of our senior surgeons.
Main Duties• Join a team of 5, mainly based at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle, with some sessions at other units (Whitehaven, Workington, Penrith). On‑call duties at Cumberland Infirmary.
• Participate in a highly motivated and cohesive team dedicated to providing an excellent service for our patients.
• Support the existing TNO service and recently started transnasal laryngeal biopsies in OPD.
• Receive flexible support and mentorship. Engage in training, national awards in recognition of this service.
• Deliver major head & neck cases, including free flap surgery, despite the rural setting.

Person Specification Essential – Education and Qualifications- Full Registration with the GMC
- Entry on the GMC specialist register via relevant CCT (proposed CCT date within 6 months of interview), relevant CESR or European Community Rights
- Fellow of Royal College of Surgeons or equivalent
- Proof of competency in emergency and elective index cases
- Advanced Training in specialist aspects of Otorhinolaryngology
- Other relevant postgraduate qualification
- High level of clinical experience and competence in Otolaryngology
- Completed Higher Specialist Training (CCT) in Otolaryngology or evidence of equivalent competency
- Commitment to and experience of teaching
- Excellent communication skills with patients, colleagues, managers and other staff
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
- Interest in developing links with Primary Care
- Experience of working in a District General hospital
- Advanced fellowship (or equivalent) in subspeciality
- Experience and commitment to teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff
- Understanding of training pathway in Otolaryngology including use of ISCP
- Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to undergraduates
- Teaching of non‑medical health professionals
- Educational Qualification
- Ability to advise on efficient and smooth running of the Otolaryngology service
- Ability to organise and manage own workload efficiently
- Experience of audit management
- Experience and commitment to medical audit
