Position: STREET SCENE OPERATIVE HSR (DRIVER)

We are looking for a motivated individual to join our Neighbourhood Services Team as a Street Scene Operative HSR Driver. Our team is committed to delivering excellent service to residents and visitors, ensuring high standards in street cleansing, maintenance, and environmental quality across all Council land, including high-speed routes and arterial roads.

About the job

As a Street Scene Operative HSR Driver, you will play a vital role in keeping our streets and open spaces clean and safe.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • General cleansing activities on all roads over 40

    MPH, roads with no pavements, and all arterial routes, including collecting litter, litter picking, clearing split bags, removing dog faeces and deposited items from highways (including fly tipping and bulky items), emptying litter bins, removal of leaf fall and weeds, sweeping, digging out of channels, and operating power tools.
  • Removal of fly-tipped waste, including furniture and bagged waste within chapter 8 road closures.
  • Digitally recording all work and uploading evidence of waste searches using tablets or smartphones.
  • Safe removal of hazardous and mixed wastes (e.g. needles, broken glass, oil, blood spillages, dead animals, faeces).
  • Acting as a point of contact for customers to advise on litter and environmental issues, taking ownership of issues and reporting or addressing them as needed.
  • Supporting gritting activities during winter, including filling and distributing grit bags and clearing snow.
  • Using power tools such as hand mowers, blowers, hedge cutters, and strimmers.
  • Cleaning and painting street furniture, and removing items affixed to the highway.
  • Rope working on steep inclines to clear litter and fly tipping.
  • Supporting traffic management (cones, temporary traffic lights, stop/go boards, signage) to enable cleansing activities.
  • Driving and operating transit vehicles, undertaking vehicle checks and relevant paperwork.
  • Maintaining accurate records and submitting daily paperwork.
  • Working flexibly to meet changing service needs and priorities.
What We Are Looking For From You
  • Experience of operating power tools or willingness to undertake required training.
  • Experience in front-line environmental operations and/or cleaning services.
  • A level of education or training which allows the understanding of risk assessment and workplace instructions.
  • Ability to keep records accurately and use technology to input data.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and meet set deadlines, standards, and targets.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of health and safety in the workplace.
  • Self-motivated, flexible, and adaptable approach to work.
  • Commitment to excellent customer service and the Council’s Equality and Diversity Policy.
  • Physically fit to undertake all elements of the role.
  • Full valid driving licence and use of a car.
  • Willingness and ability to work regular evenings, weekends, and bank holidays as required.
Additional information
  • The post may require you to work from any designated Council facility.
  • The post will involve shift work, including weekends and bank holidays (excluding Christmas Day).
  • Essential driving:
    Full driving licence is required.
  • You will be required to work outdoors in all weather conditions and may be exposed to hazardous waste and potentially aggressive members of the public.
