StJohn Ambulance Cymru trains around 25,000 people per year in First Aid and provides medical cover at around 1000 events ranging from World Tour gigs and international sporting fixtures through to community events across Wales.

Our
2000 volunteers and young people undertake educational programmes, such as Event Responder, to gain the skills to provide this service to communities.

In addition to this we provide falls and mental health response and safe transport services for the NHS.

As our new Director of Clinical Operations and Education you will hold executive accountability through the heads of response and education for the planning, delivery, quality and reliability of these services as well as the experience of our volunteers patients and employees.

As a registrant you will advocate for our patients and with our Chief Medical Officer, a senior volunteer post, make sure our clinical systems, policies and outcomes are sector leading.

Working directly to the CEO and with our Strategy Wales as Community of Lifesavers moving into its second year and following our investment in fleet and equipment in 2025 its a great time to join our charity.

This role reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer and is a key member of the Executive Leadership Team and our organisation's clinical lead. The ELT have shared accountability for the experience of our St John People, both volunteers and employees, and for role modelling our culture, values and behaviours. Leading our response and education teams which includes all operational activity, logistics and fleet as well as our education teams you will be accountable for the delivery of services that Wales relies upon.

In addition, as our most senior clinician, with the support of our Chief Medical Officer - a volunteer post, and Clinical Trustees, you will ensure the highest standards of clinical governance and safety. In order to be a visible leader and to understand our services, regular travel throughout Wales will be a requirement for this role.

At St John Ambulance Cymru we provide around 24 hours support to the NHS ambulance service operating the national falls response service for Wales and national mental health, non-secure, transport services.

We provide medical care at over 1200 events per year ranging from international and national sporting fixtures and concerts through large crowd cultural events such as the Eisteddfod and smaller local community events and night‑time economy schemes.

Our people complete education programmes as Event and Emergency Responders as well as a host of other operational qualifications.

We train around 25,000 people per annum in First Aid and associated safety courses for their workplace through our training enterprise.

Key duties and responsibilities:

Inspire leaders across your directorate and the wider organisation to be the best they can be, valuing feedback, challenge and development as essential.

Define and deliver initiatives to improve operational and clinical effectiveness and performance across all operational and education focused areas of SJAC.

Ensure that our people and those who rely on us are at the forefront of our planning and decisions.

Lead with our Chief Commissioner our most senior volunteer, to provide equity of experience to our volunteers and employees.

Lead our operational activity ensuring operational and clinical quality and reliability.

Lead our clinical standards to be the best in the sector.

Lead our education teams to deliver the best training and education for our people and in communities across Wales.

Lead our support teams to deliver a best in class logistics and fleet system across the charity.

Chairing our Serious Incident Group, ensuring that we are operating safely and managing incidents well when they occur.

Develop an operational dashboard to track progress.

Work with the Chief Executive, ELT and other key stakeholders to develop and deliver our strategy  Wales as a Community of Lifesavers.

Lead the development of a comprehensive clinical operational strategy that delivers our services and our mission.

Identify and plan key work streams to achieve the strategy and monitoring progress of delivery.

Along with the wider ELT relentlessly promote inclusive practices, ensuring equal opportunities and inclusiveness across the workforce and all areas of accountability.

Act as a strategic advisor to the ELT and Board on all clinical and operational matters, including ensuring our education activity supports and advances this.
