Job DescriptionAt Legal & General, our customers are at the heart of everything we do. Our Customer Payroll team plays a crucial role in delivering accurate and timely payments that directly support customer wellbeing. We’re looking for a Payroll Operations Subject Matter Expert to bring technical payroll expertise, strong analytical skills and a collaborative mindset to our high‑performing team. Whatyou'll be doing:
- Providing expert technical support across payroll processing, reporting and operational controls
- Leading on complex payroll queries, investigations and escalations
- Supporting system, process and control improvements including testing and documentation updates
- Conducting quality checks and monitoring activity to ensure accuracy and risk alignment
- Ensuring regulatory, legislative and internal process requirements are understood and applied
- Identifying and recommending opportunities for continuous improvement across teams
- Supporting colleagues with consistent training, guidance and technical knowledge
- Contributing SME insight to projects, audits, initiatives and wider business engagement
- Strong experience in pension payroll environments, ideally with 10,000+ volume processing
- Solid understanding of payroll processes, reconciliations, exception management and variance analysis
- Confidence in analysing and interpreting financial and technical payroll data
- Ability to engage, influence and collaborate with colleagues across different teams
- Strong awareness of payroll regulation, risk and controls
- Ability to apply sound judgement and problem‑solving in complex scenarios
- Commitment to delivering fair customer outcomes and embedding Conduct Risk principles
- Adaptability, initiative and a positive approach to change and continuous improvement
