Joining Arup

Arup's purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 75 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

Our process chemical and process engineering team comprises specialist chemical engineers, scientists and industrial experts who shape everything from conceptual design ideas through pre‑FEED and FEED to completed turnkey facilities. We support projects at all stages of delivery, ensuring safe, regulatory compliant solutions. We focus on design development, process optimisation, debottlenecking and control of chemical, physical and biological processes, from hydrogen production to carbon capture and transformation through to water and wastewater treatment.

The

Opportunity

We are looking for candidates with a background in process engineering design on multi‑disciplinary projects within the municipal and industrial water sectors. With our depth and breadth of skills, our team is currently involved in many exciting projects across the Energy, Water and Resources sectors. Whilst the team is based across the North of England, much of our work involves supporting projects internationally, integrating with teams in our offices across the globe.

As a senior engineer you will likely work across the project life cycle from developing concept designs to outline and detailed designs, and you will have the ability to lead process engineering teams to ensure production of deliverables to established timelines and within budget.

What You’ll Do

You will co‑ordinate the work of others and liaise with engineers of other disciplines, imparting your knowledge and experiences. You will work in highly regulated sectors, within a gated design and project delivery process. You will be involved in the development of mass and energy balances, process data sheets, control philosophies, and commissioning plans. You will also be involved in report writing and the development of fee proposals and feasibility studies of plant operating and capital costs.

We expect you to have a practical comprehension of how your designs will be implemented and of digital approaches to solve our problems, including the relevant current analysis and design software.

We operate an enviable graduate training scheme, which is accredited by the IChemE, and as a senior engineer you will be expected to join the mentoring programme and help to shape our future pipeline of process engineers. We are looking for candidates with experience of a variety of technologies needed for the treatment of potable water, wastewater and biosolids processing.

What We’re Looking For
  • Degree qualified in chemical engineering or similar
  • Familiarity with wastewater and/or drinking water treatment processes, including innovative technologies and approaches
  • Understanding of the municipal UK treatment landscape
  • Familiarity with UK water industry regulations and compliance standards
  • Experience using Biowin/GPS‑X modelling software
  • Experience acting as the process designer in HAZOP teams and chairing Haz Op studies
  • Resolution of technical matters and ideally experience of working in highly regulated sectors
  • Development of fee proposals, creation of PIDs, plant layouts, GA and creation of energy and mass balances
  • Development of feasibility studies and plant operating and capital costs
  • Experience of digital approaches to solve problems including relevant current analysis and design software
