The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Engineer to join our Consulting Rail team. With shared office locations in Birmingham, Derby, York, Bristol, Manchester, and Cardiff, we welcome applications from candidates across these regions.

Key Projects
  • Design Partner on major rail infrastructure projects including Wales & Borders, Northern Powerhouse Rail, Eastern Routes Partnership, North West & Central Framework, Core Valley Lines, Trans‑Pennine Route Upgrade, and Cardiff Crossrail.
  • Delivery of design solutions across all Network Rail stages and disciplines.
  • Opportunities for personal and professional development in long‑term programmes and community‑focused initiatives.
The Role

Our Engineers play an important part within the Consulting Rail Design team and alongside our clients, including Network Rail. As a Civil Engineer, you will support the Senior Engineer in the design and delivery of a variety of rail design schemes and mentor junior team members to ensure high‑quality designs and successful outcomes.

Responsibilities Include
  • Work in a team, producing technically sound engineering solutions that comply with all relevant technical standards and client requirements, working unsupervised and supervising more junior members of staff.
  • Prepare and check designs, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy the overarching criteria of quality, cost and programme. Oversee the actions of more junior members of staff and take responsibility for their actions.
  • Liaise with client and supplier representatives at the peer level, attend progress meetings and respond to queries.
  • Manage a small, locally based, single‑discipline technical team and take responsibility for the delivery of the workload.
  • Contribute to the preparation of bids and the general work‑winning function.
  • Work on site, either visiting or in a full‑time temporary role, including out of hours working.
  • Assume the role of people manager when required by the business.
What You Will Bring To Us
  • A Degree or Masters qualification in a relevant discipline.
  • Relevant experience in civil engineering within the rail sector, working in a commercial and customer‑focused way that meets programme, performance targets and generates income.
  • Confidence to work under minimum supervision and competence to check the work of others and supervise less experienced or junior staff.
  • Good understanding of DMRB, other national standards, best practice guidance and local standards.
  • Good understanding of CDM regulations and their relevance to Rail design.
  • Ability to support the preparation of briefs for fee quotes for the delivery of services when required.
  • Ability to deliver on time, within budget and to the required quality.
  • Keep up to date with industry best practice and apply it within the team where appropriate.
