Position: OUTDOOR LEADER

The Storey Arms Outdoor Education Centre works in close partnership with schools, youth services and community groups to deliver high‑quality day and residential outdoor education courses in the Bannau Brycheiniog and South Wales. As a multi‑activity centre we offer a range of activities, including mountain walking, caving, paddle sport, climbing, gorge walking, and more.

There are two aspects to the Storey Arms provision:

A 60‑bed residential centre in the heart of Bannau Brycheiniog, delivering outdoor education to a diverse range of users.

The Storey Arms Outreach team is based in Cardiff and operates throughout South Wales, predominantly delivering outdoor education to vulnerable learners with ALN.

We also deliver Duke of Edinburgh expeditions (Bronze, Silver & Gold), mainly based in Bannau Brycheiniog National Park.

About the job

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic candidate, suitably qualified to contribute and develop the multi‑activity programme Storey Arms offers. The post will be predominantly based at the Storey Arms centre, but may also require delivery through the Storey Arms Outreach team. The successful candidate will work with a well‑established team to deliver an outdoor learning programme tailored for each group.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading a range of adventurous and outdoor educational activities, adhering to risk assessments and policies.
  • Working independently and with accompanying visiting staff.
  • Facilitating residential experiences, including evening activities on a rota basis and occasional weekends.
  • Supporting young people, particularly those with ALN, in outdoor education settings.

  • Suitably qualified to lead a range of activities.
  • Effective working as an individual and as a team member.
  • Clear understanding of the importance of outdoor learning to a child's or young person's educational journey.
  • Clear understanding of risk management and the systems that support it.
  • Experience instructing in outdoor education settings and supporting young people with ALN.
  • Possession of a D1+E driving licence.

This post is temporary until 31/03/2027.
