The Dermatology Directorate at the University Hospital of Wales is one of the professorial Dermatology Units in the UK. It is the focal point of treatment, teaching and research in Dermatology in the Principality. It has an unparalleled service in dermatological surgery and provides Moh's micrographic surgery for the treatment of skin cancer. Each year some 4,000 day case surgical operations are performed in the department.

Skills in cutaneous surgery are taught locally to general practitioners and higher surgical trainees in various disciplines. The department provides a comprehensive service for the outpatient and inpatient management of all dermatological conditions, including contact and industrial dermatitis, photobiology, molecular biology, biologics, dermatopathology and laser treatments.

Main duties of the job

The duties of the Fellow in cutaneous surgery include shared responsibility with the consultant dermatologists for the surgical management of patients in the department and supervision of Specialist Resident doctors in dermatology. Routine outpatient clinics are held at the University Hospital of Wales and at University Hospital Llandough, Penarth. Visits on request may be made to other hospitals in the teaching group.

The timetable is flexible and may alter to accommodate the post holder s training needs in specific areas. The post holder will be responsible for cutaneous surgery patients admitted to the main hospital.

Job responsibilities

The one-year programme in cutaneous surgery will provide training and experience in all aspects of modern cutaneous surgery with an emphasis on the management of skin cancer.

The post is available for a fixed term of 12 months from 31 August 2026.

On completion of this programme it is anticipated that the trainee will have the skills appropriate to a dermatologist with a special interest in cutaneous surgery, including Moh s micrographic surgery and surgical reconstruction for skin cancer.

The post complies with the British Society for Dermatological Surgery curriculum and the requirements of the British Association of Dermatology Post-CCT Fellowship in advanced Dermatology Surgery and Moh s micrographic surgery.

These are the current applicable pay scales; however, these may change upon implementation of the framework agreement for reform to the terms and conditions of service for resident doctors and dentists in Wales. Further details can be found at

Person Specification Qualifications
  • MB BS/Mb ChB or equivalent
  • On Specialist Register for specialty / Specialty Registrar with CCT / CESR(CP) due within six months of interview date
  • Full GMC Registration with licence to practice
  • Intercalated Degree

  • Broad training and experience in dermatology and cutaneous surgery
