Responsibilities

  • Fellow in cutaneous surgery shares responsibility with consultant dermatologists for the surgical management of patients in the department and supervises Specialist Resident doctors in dermatology.
  • Conducts routine outpatient clinics at the University Hospital of Wales and at University Hospital Llandough, Penarth.
  • Visits on request may be made to other hospitals in the teaching group.
  • The timetable is flexible and may be altered to accommodate the post holder's training in specific areas.
  • The post holder will be responsible for cutaneous surgery patients admitted to the main hospital.

Ther Dermatology Directorate at the University Hospital of Wales is one of the professorial Dermatology Units in the UK. It is the focal point of treatment, teaching and research in Dermatology in the Principality. It has an unparalleled service in dermatological surgery and is one of the centres in the UK which provides Mohc micrographic surgery for the treatment of skin cancer.

Each year some 4,000 day case surgical operations are performed in the department. Skills in cutaneous surgery are taught locally to general practitioners and higher surgical trainees in various disciplines. The department provides a comprehensive service for the outpatient and inpatient management of all dermatological conditions, including contact and industrial dermatitis, photobiology, molecular biology, biologics, dermatopathology and laser treatments. Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is one of the largest Integrated Health Boards in the UK, employing over 17,000 staff, providing over 100 specialist services.
