Position Overview

This position is accountable for the operation, inspection, minor repair work, and routine maintenance of all state‑maintained bridges and numbered box culverts in the district.

Essential Functions
  • Develops and implements plans and programs to assure year‑round maintenance of bridges.
  • Directs inspections, minor repair work, and routine maintenance of all bridges in the district to determine repair or maintenance required at each structure.
  • Compiles records and prepares reports regarding bridge maintenance for accounting purposes.
  • Reviews, as requested, preliminary bridge plans for future construction to ensure needs are being addressed.
  • Attends field review inspections, as requested, for final acceptance of bridge construction; assists construction staff on minor and major issues during construction of projects.
  • Trains, motivates and evaluates subordinate personnel.
  • Supervises or aids in emergency maintenance.
  • Assists central office Bureau of Bridges and Structures as needed.
  • Performs duties in compliance with the departmental safety rules.
  • Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois.
  • Five years of experience in civil engineering.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of bridge types, basic components and problems related to bridges.
  • Ability to initiate, coordinate and direct large‑scale engineering programs or research and planning activities of a difficult technical nature.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the laws and policies controlling the activities administered.
  • Good decision making, supervisory and organizational skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
Conditions of Employment
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • 24/7 emergency call‑out ability.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, climb steep terrain, wade in water, lift/carry equipment up to 30 pounds, and perform outdoor work in a variety of conditions including inclement weather and active construction sites.
  • Extensive travel within the district and occasional travel outside the district and state, which may include overnight stays.
  • Occasional overtime during nights and weekends.
  • Program Manager and Team Leader status for Routine Inspections as defined in the Structural Services Manual within 12 months of start date.
  • Element Level and Non‑Redundant Steel Tension Member certification or the ability to obtain within 6 months of start date.
