The special education teacher must work collaboratively to instruct and assist students in mastering subject matter and skills while at the same time encouraging and supporting their positive academic and social-emotional growth. Build relational trust and foster a growth mindset for all students. Monitor data related to Individualized Education Plans and provide support to students in general education and/or small group classes that support learners with social-emotional and behavioral needs, specific learning disabilities, and other impairments that require special education support services.
Professional responsibilities include:
1. Ability to write, implement and monitor Individualized Education Plans.
2. Work directly with other certified Special Education and General Education teachers to plan for,
coordinate responses to, and implement the management of student academic and social-emotional
needs to maintain a positive learning environment.
3. The ability to collaborate to create a Functional Behavior Analysis and Behavior Intervention Plans.
4. Assume primary responsibility for increasing student achievement (i.e. mastery of knowledge and
skills, character, and high-quality work) by designing and implementing cross-curricular units of
study that integrate literacy instruction and utilize active pedagogy.
5. Create a collaborative student-centered classroom that thrives on differentiated instruction to
increase student growth and enhance school culture.
6. Design lesson plans that allow for flexible, uninterrupted blocks of time that foster deeper learning,
and content-based literacy.
7. Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the District
and/or professional growth activities and university courses.
8. Establish clear and consistent assessment and progress monitoring techniques based on evidence
to make instructional decisions to meet students' needs and further their growth.
9. Proficient in the use of technology for individual communication and research.
10. Cultivate strong partnerships with families and communicates with parents through a variety of
means.
11. Knowledgeable in data collection and analysis.
12. The ability to build and maintain relationships with colleagues that supports a cooperative work
environment.
13. The ability to set goals and establish methods for achieving said goals.
14. Monitors and evaluates performance of paraprofessionals as assigned.
15. Participates in faculty and/or District committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
16. Assists with school-wide supervision of students during out-of-classroom activities.
Qualifications
Valid Illinois Professional Educator License authorizing services as a Special Education Teacher
(i.e., LBS1 certification).
