Assistant Professor (MAME) – Mechanical Engineering (Advanced Manufacturing)
The School of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Materials Engineering (MAME) at Southern Illinois University Carbondale invites applications for one full‑time, continuing, tenure‑track nine‑month Assistant Professor position to start in August 11, 2026. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
Examples of DutiesThe selected candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses within the School, conduct high‑quality research, supervise graduate student theses and dissertations, and actively contribute to service at the School, College, and University levels.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications: Applicants must have, at the time of appointment, a B.S. and Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related area. Ph.D. candidates may be considered if all degree requirements are met by August 11, 2026. If all requirements for the Ph.D. degree are not completed by that date, a term, non‑tenure track appointment may be offered in accordance with the University policy.
Applicants must have teaching competency in the core mechanical engineering courses at the undergraduate level. Applicants must demonstrate the potential to establish a funded research program, maintain a strong record of publications in high‑impact peer‑reviewed journals, and actively engage in national and international conferences.
Additional Information: Applications from areas of Mechanical Engineering that complement the School's current strengths in mechanical systems, manufacturing, aerospace, materials, energy, and biomechanics will be entertained. The primary focus area for this search will be advanced manufacturing, robotics, and automation within the context of Industry 4.0. Relevant expertise includes, but is not limited to, smart manufacturing systems, human‑robot collaboration, digital twins, and AI‑driven process control.
Experience with integrating robotics into industrial workflows and collaboration potential with industry partners is highly desirable. Candidates with potential to collaborate within the School and across campus will be considered a plus.
