Assistant Professor (MAME) Mechanical Engineering (Materials Science and Engineering)
The School of Mechanical, Aerospace, and Materials Engineering (MAME) at Southern Illinois University Carbondale invites applications for a full‑time, continuing, tenure‑track nine‑month Assistant Professor position starting August 11, 2026. Salary is competitive, commensurate with qualifications, and considers internal equity.
Examples of DutiesTeach undergraduate and graduate courses within the School, conduct high‑quality research, supervise graduate student theses and dissertations, and actively contribute to service at the School, College, and University levels.
Qualifications- Minimum: B.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or a related area. Ph.D. candidates may be considered if all degree requirements are met by August 11, 2026. If the Ph.D. requirements are not completed by that date, a term, non‑tenure‑track appointment may be offered in accordance with the University policy (University policy).
- Teaching competency in core mechanical engineering undergraduate courses.
- Potential to establish a funded research program, a strong record of publications in high‑impact peer‑reviewed journals, and active engagement in national and international conferences.
- Alignment with data‑driven and AI‑guided materials design, including generative design, predictive modeling for in‑situ process monitoring, novel material development, microstructure control, and integration of machine learning, artificial intelligence, and computational materials science to accelerate materials discovery, design, and optimization.
- Ability to collaborate within the School and across campus.
