Job DescriptionThis position is for a highly-skilled analyst and researcher to conduct and/or support commissioned economic, social, technological, environmental, and policy analyses of the South African fossil fuel industry. The successful candidate will have a strong background in economic and environmental analysis, excellent critical reasoning skills, and experience in translating complex technical findings into clear, policy-relevant insights in a manner that is compelling and understandable to a general audience.
We are looking for someone with a good understanding of current issues relating to the just energy transition, and a sophisticated grasp of the role and impacts of corporate power in shaping national energy policy.
- Conduct in-depth research and rigorous analysis of decarbonisation and other transition pathways, and economic, social and environmental risks and opportunities.
- Translate complex data and research into succinct, impactful briefings and communications products that provide technical critiques and assessments of decarbonisation pathways.
- Oversee and manage contributions to the research and publication of relevant materials; including regular liaison with multi-disciplinary experts.
- Build networks and engage civil society, community-based organisations, journalists and policymakers around the issues of industrial decarbonisation.
- Monitor ongoing regulatory developments and adapt advocacy and focus accordingly.
- Provide general support to the climate team in relation to its campaign to improve private sector accountability for climate-related impacts.
- A postgraduate qualification in a relevant field including: science, engineering, finance, economics, political economy, law, and at least 5 years’ proven experience as a professional researcher, analyst, or investigative journalist.
- Relevant specialist experience in industrial decarbonisation is a bonus.
- Strong interest in the interaction between technical and economic feasibility of decarbonisation and social justice, and in corporate influence.
- Understanding of key issues and trends relating to the energy transition.
- The ability to keep abreast of developments in a rapidly changing context, and to develop and articulate effective strategies to drive change in complex systems.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- A collaborative mindset and a proven ability to work effectively with a team.
- Emotional intelligence and a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and open communication.
