The Template Developer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining automated legal document templates used by law firms across Canada, the UK, and South Africa. This role involves translating legal and business requirements into automated document logic, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and usability across a wide range of legal precedents, statutory court forms, and correspondence documents.
The successful candidate will combine strong technical capability with exceptional attention to detail and a passion for document development. They will work closely with legal and business stakeholders to create scalable, reliable, and efficient automated templates that support high-quality legal document production.
Key Responsibilities- Design, build, and maintain automated legal templates, including court forms, legal precedents, and correspondence documents.
- Construct, format, and style documents using Microsoft Word and proprietary Word-like template development tools.
- Analyse legal documents to determine the appropriate level of automation and document logic.
- Translate document requirements into automated logic using conditional rules (e.g., if/then/else), fill points, stop-codes, and dialog structures.
- Link user-input data to templates to enable automated document assembly and distribution to relevant recipients.
- Conduct research to understand the legal, regulatory, and operational environment in which documents are used.
- Test, troubleshoot, and refine templates to ensure accuracy, functionality, and usability.
- Maintain and update existing templates to reflect legal, regulatory, or client-specific changes.
- Ensure consistency, precision, and quality across all developed templates.
- Manage multiple tasks and deadlines while maintaining high levels of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including legal, technical, and business teams.
Essential
- Advanced Microsoft Word and document formatting skills.
- Experience in template or document development.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to work with logic-based automation and structured documents.
- Strong time management and ability to manage multiple tasks.
- Comfortable working in technical and document-driven environments.
Nice to Have
- Experience with document automation.
- Legal / Law office domain knowledge.
- Skills in MS Office automation (eg. MS Excel).
- IT/IS background.
