Rondebosch Boys’ Preparatory School invites applications for a dedicated and experienced School Nurse to provide professional health services to ensure the physical, emotional and social well‑being of boys and staff. This role combines clinical care, health education and preventive health strategies, fostering a safe, nurturing and health-conscious school environment. The nurse works collaboratively with teachers, parents, counsellors and external healthcare professionals to support each child’s holistic development.
Working Hours: 07:30 to 16:00 - Monday to Friday and Fixture Saturdays 08:00 to 13:00
Starting date: 1 July 2026
Minimum RequirementsQualifications and Requirements
- Registered Professional Nurse (SANC registration required).
- 5 years nursing experience within a school environment.
- Experience in paediatric, school, or community nursing preferred.
- Current certification in First Aid, CPR, and emergency management (Level
3). - Excellent interpersonal, administrative, and communication skills.
- Understanding of child development and safeguarding practices.
- Familiarity with Department of Health and WCED guidelines for school health programmes.
- Police Clearance and Child Protection Clearance Certificate.
1. Clinical Care & First Aid
- Provide first‑line treatment and triage for minor injuries, illnesses and medical conditions during the school day.
- Manage and maintain the school’s First Aid Room / Wellness Centre ensuring cleanliness, stock control and confidentiality.
- Manage and maintain all first aid kits across all campuses and sporting codes.
- Administer medications as per prescribed instructions with parental and physician consent.
- Maintain accurate health records for all students (allergies, chronic conditions, immunisations).
- Liaise with emergency services when necessary and accompany students in emergencies until parents arrive.
- Support staff and coaches during school sports fixtures, camps and events where medical coverage is required.
- Responsible for arranging medical services for sporting events and or practices(where applicable)
Note:
Within the scope of practice, the nurse may treat minor injuries (cuts, bruises, mild allergic reactions), manage medication administration, monitor chronic conditions (asthma, diabetes, epilepsy) and provide emergency care until a doctor or paramedic takes over.
2. Health Promotion & Education
- Plan and deliver age‑appropriate health education programmes (e.g., hygiene, nutrition, puberty, sun safety, emotional well‑being).
- Run Wellness Campaigns in partnership with Life Orientation and Physical Education staff (e.g., Healthy Body Week, Handwashing Drive, Mental Health Awareness).
- Provide guidance to staff on infection control, head lice management, allergy protocols and classroom hygiene practices.
- Support the Life Orientation curriculum with modules on self‑care, resilience and emotional literacy.
3. Preventive & Screening Programmes
- Conduct routine health screenings (vision, hearing, growth monitoring, BMI) and refer concerns to parents and healthcare providers.
- Monitor immunisation records and liaise with public health services when necessary.
- Support mental health awareness and early identification of emotional or behavioural issues in collaboration with the school counsellor.
4. Administration & Compliance
- Maintain confidential and accurate medical records in line with POPIA regulations.
- Keep an up‑to‑date record of student allergies, chronic conditions and emergency contacts.
- Prepare and manage an annual health budget (first aid supplies, screening equipment, educational materials).
- Draft and update the school’s Health and Safety Policies, Infectious Disease Policy, and Emergency Medical Response Plan.
- Train and coordinate First Aid staff across the school and maintain certification records.
- Prepare incident reports and risk assessments where required.
5. Community & Pastoral Collaboration
- Work closely with pastoral care staff to provide integrated support for students dealing with chronic illness, grief, trauma or anxiety.
