Overview

This Lead Dental Assistant position is located at the Lee County Healthcare System - Cape Coral - FL. The Lead Dental Assistant is an integral member of the dental team and facilitates team processes by working collaboratively with team members to ensure that tasks are completed, maintain good working relationships with team members and management, and coordinate team priorities and goals with management.

Responsibilities
  • Lead a team of dental employees and Fee Basis dental providers; provide guidance and technical direction for accomplishing the work of the team.
  • Monitor and manage the dental team’s performance on National dental performance measures and indicators; serve as a work leader and coordinate daily assignments at the start of the shift and as needed.
  • Provide expert advice on tasks, procedures, and policies; identify training needs and instruct team members and trainees in specific tasks and job techniques.
  • Train team members and fee basis providers in computerized dental patient record systems, including generating patient consults, storing and viewing digital images, data entry for diagnoses and treatment plans.
  • Maintain current knowledge and answer questions from team members on procedures, policies, and directives; make written instructions and reference materials available.
  • Develop and implement SOPs for Reusable Medical Devices (RMD); train the dental team in SOPs and report noncompliance to the Dental Chief or Supervisory Dental Assistant.
  • Proficient clinical duties: four-handed chair-side dental assisting, dental lab procedures, and other tasks delegated by the dentist consistent with the Florida State Dental Practice Act.
  • Ensure compliance with Patient Safety processes: infection control, patient identification, time-out, informed consent, medication reconciliation, and hand-off communication; follow SOPs for reusable medical devices, instruments, materials, and PPE.
  • Keep patients informed of clinic delays and prepare operatory with needed equipment, materials, and supplies; perform post-procedure operatory turnover.
  • Record vital signs and medical history; recognize signs of distress and monitor patient condition during treatment.
  • Capture diagnostic quality dental radiographs (intraoral and extraoral) in a timely manner.
  • Maintain ability to work with a full range of duties with some independence in assigned specialties at the appropriate grade level.
Qualifications
  • Basic Requirements:
    United States Citizenship as applicable; education/experience: six months experience or education; successful completion of a 1-year CODA-accredited dental assistant program or equivalent combinations of experience and education; radiographer certification per 42 CFR Part 75 or equivalent; DANB certification as required for positions above the full performance level;
    English language proficiency as required.
  • Grade Determinations:
    At least 1 year of experience at GS-06 level demonstrating core competencies; ability to perform full range of duties with some independence; GA-level capabilities in four-handed dentistry, assisting in specialty procedures, impressions, gypsum/manipulation, and diagnostic cast preparation; strong knowledge of dental procedures across restorative, surgical, endodontic, and periodontal care; data entry in electronic dental records; laboratory procedures; and ability to coordinate clinical workflow and guide staff.
  • Physical Requirements:

    moderate lifting, heavy carrying, rapid coordination, vision and hearing requirements; extended walking and standing.
Duties and Conditions
  • Monitor and assign work, provide input on performance, resolve daily workplace issues, and maintain efficient patient flow; assist in direct patient care and perform clinical, dental laboratory, administrative, and program management tasks.
  • Provide guidance, ensure compliance with SOPs, coordinate with Dental Chief and Supervisory Dental Assistant; train team in SOPs and patient record systems; maintain up-to-date procedures and background materials.
  • Clinical duties include four-handed dentistry, radiology, infection control, patient safety, dental imaging, operatory setup and turnover, vital signs recording, and appointment management.
  • Schedule:

    Monday–Friday, 8:00am–4:30pm. Pay: competitive salary with regular increases;
    Paid Time Off and federal benefits as described. Telework not available; this is not a virtual position.
