Position Summary
The Solid Waste Operator performs skilled and semi-skilled work related to the collection, transportation, and disposal of solid waste and recyclable materials. This position operates heavy trucks and equipment, provides direct public service to residents and businesses, and ensures compliance with safety procedures, departmental policies, and applicable state and federal regulations.
Minimum Qualifications- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Valid Texas Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements (or ability to obtain within specified timeframe)
- Acceptable driving record
- Ability to pass background check, physical examination, and substance abuse screening
The following duties are representative of the position and are not intended to be all-inclusive:
- Operates solid waste collection vehicles, including rear load, sideload, sideload or automated trucks, front‑load, roll‑off, or automated trucks
- Collects residential and/or commercial solid waste, and bulk items according to assigned routes and schedules
- Safely loads, compacts, transports, and unloads solid waste at designated disposal or transfer facilities
- Performs daily vehicle inspections and reports mechanical issues or safety concerns
- Maintains assigned equipment in a clean and serviceable condition
- Follows established safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Interacts professionally with the public; addresses routine service questions and reports complaints or service issues
- Assists with litter cleanup, route maintenance, and special collection events as needed
- Completes required documentation, including inspection forms, and service records
- Complies with all departmental policies, traffic laws, and environmental regulations
- Reports accidents, injuries, property damage, or unsafe conditions immediately
- Performs related duties as assigned
- A high school diploma or GED is required
- 2 years of solid waste operator experience is preferred, but not required.
- Experience operating automated or roll‑out collection vehicles
- Knowledge of recycling programs and waste diversion practices
- Safe operation of heavy commercial vehicles
- Solid waste collection methods and equipment
- Traffic laws and defensive driving practices
- Workplace safety procedures and hazard awareness
- Operating heavy trucks and collection equipment
- Manual handling of refuse containers and bulk materials
- Effective verbal communication with coworkers and the public
- Follow written and verbal instructions
- Work independently or as part of a team
- Maintain focus and productivity in outdoor and inclement conditions
- Adhere to schedules, routes, and service standards
- Respond appropriately to service issues and emergencies
- Complete required records accurately and in a timely manner
- The position performs most of the work Monday–Friday. Work hours are typically 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. However, this position is subject to after‑hours and holiday hours worked to respond to street department emergencies.
- Most of the work is performed in a well‑equipped vehicle. However, there will be many instances where work outdoors in all types of weather may be required.
- Travel for the position is considered minimal. Occasional travel may be required for training. Also, some travel may be required to obtain supplies and equipment.
