Open ExaminationTo be eligible for this examination, applicants must be a U.S. Citizen or have a permanent residence card. Applicants must be a high school graduate or possess a GED and be at least 18 years of age.
Job DescriptionReports to the Code Supervisor under the direction of the Chief Building Official for the inspection of housing structures in the City of Canton. Performs related work as required and follows up on all properties to ensure completion with respect to Certificates of Occupancy, demolition, or complaints dealing with residential housing facilities.
Distinguishing Features Of The ClassEmployees must apply the standards and regulations of Chapter 13, Titles 7 and 9 of the City of Canton Codified Ordinances, and applicable State and Federal regulations to protect and preserve the housing stock within the City.
Examples Of WorkInspects existing dwellings and buildings, whether occupied or unoccupied, in accordance with Chapter 13 of the Codified Ordinances of the City and all other applicable building codes and regulations enforceable in the City of Canton, State of Ohio, or Federal regulations.
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities- Familiar with construction terminology and general knowledge of building materials.
- Familiar with the City of Canton Building and Housing Code.
- Ability to detect unsafe and unsanitary living conditions and make recommendations for correction.
- Maintain positive working relationships with building owners, contractors, and tenants; possess good public relations skills.
- Obtain an International Property Maintenance Code Certificate per the International Code Council within ninety (90) days after appointment.
- Take a Code Officer General Knowledge Test.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Knowledge and experience in general building construction or inspection.
- Any combination of experience or training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be evaluated.
- Valid State of Ohio driver’s license.
Applicants will be placed on an eligibility list in accordance with their application filing date. The list will remain for one year. Drug testing is required; eligibility is not final until a negative result is obtained. Background investigation may include a criminal record check and driving record check.
