    Job Description

    The City of Canton Income Tax Division needs a Tax Auditor/Collector II to work with confidential tax documents, assist taxpayers, and conduct audits.

    Duties include:

    • Answering taxpayer inquiries by phone, in person, and in writing about municipal tax code, filings, balances, refunds, estimates, with holdings, delinquencies, and audits.
    • Assisting taxpayers with eFile and ePay transactions, preparing city tax returns, verifying account information, setting up new accounts, processing payments and remittances, and forwarding documents to the cashier’s office.
    • Pre‑auditing tax returns and ensuring source documentation (W‑2, 1099, Schedule C, etc.) is attached; checking returns for mathematical accuracy and notifying taxpayers of corrections.
    • Collecting unpaid balances, negotiating payment terms, following up with calls, letters, and subpoenas, and preparing documentation for legal proceedings.
    • Obtaining returns from non‑filers and delinquent filers, identifying and investigating delinquent taxpayers through various records and skip‑tracing.
    • Auditing all returns in the assigned account group, reviewing filings and books, verifying wages and deductions, issuing subpoenas, conducting interviews, and preparing status reports for delinquencies, payment agreements, bankruptcies, and uncollectible accounts.
    • Calculating and assessing fines, penalties, and interest.
    Qualifications
    • Graduated from an accredited college or university with a major or concentration in Accounting or Finance.
    • Associate’s degree required.
    • Previous experience or training in tax preparation and auditing is preferred but not mandatory.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, strong judgment, professional integrity, and the ability to function under pressure.
    • Mathematical aptitude and accuracy, basic knowledge of accounting principles, bookkeeping procedures, and familiarity with the Municipal Tax Code, Internal Revenue Code, and Ohio Revised Code.
    Requirements/Physical Requirements
    • Extremely trustworthy, reliable, responsible, organized, and thorough.
    • Ability to establish effective working relationships with public and private sector tax professionals.
    • Follow complex oral and written instructions efficiently.
    Testing Information

    The written examination will cover general accounting, federal income tax, city income tax, public relations, number verification, reading comprehension, problem solving, and related areas. A non‑printing calculator may be used; phones or smart watches are prohibited.
