This is a combined closed and open examination. Applicants for the closed examination must be an existing classified employee of the City of Canton and have completed their probationary period by February 12, 2026.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

This is a responsible, professional and managerial position. An employee in this classification assists the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent in the supervisory and skilled mechanical work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of equipment, machinery, buildings, and related appurtenances at the Water Reclamation Facility (WRF). An employee in this classification supervises and directs the mechanical and related activities at the WRF.

The Maintenance Chief has the responsibility for making work assignments and for inspecting maintenance work to ensure that the plant continuously operates at top efficiency. The employee outlines policies, procedures, and maintenance requirements, and makes frequent inspections to ensure equipment and facilities are operational to ensure compliance. The individual is responsible for the direction of work and manner of accomplishment of the maintenance staff.

The employee may be assigned supervision of Operations personnel in the temporary absence of the Chief Operator. This position works closely with the Chief Operator to ensure equipment is optimized for efficient operations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Required: Graduation from high school or equivalent and five years of progressively more responsible experience in the City of Canton Water Reclamation Facility or comparable facility, including supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and/or training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Possession of a Wastewater Operator Class II certificate issued by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency is required.

Must obtain a Wastewater Operator Class III certificate issued by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency within two (2) years of obtaining the position unless an extension is granted by the appointing authority. Must possess a fundamental knowledge of the mechanical trades and operations of wastewater treatment plants as demonstrated by applicable training and experience.

UNIQUE REQUIREMENT /

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge of modern wastewater treatment plant operations, practices, and servicing/maintenance requirements. Extensive experience with computerized maintenance programs. Extensive experience in maintenance of pumps, motors, valves, etc. Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, and materials of the mechanical and electrical trades. Ability to interpret and work from sketches, diagrams, blueprints, and broken parts. Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions and devices applicable to WRF operations and maintenance work.

General knowledge of the appropriate chemical and bacteriological processes involved in the treatment of wastewater. Ability to analyze situations and develop workable solutions. Ability to present ideas effectively, verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, department heads, City employees, other agencies, and the general public. Ability to supervise departmental staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Performs supervisory, managerial, and administrative functions at the Water Reclamation Facility as described in the above General Statement of Duties.

  • Responsible for day-to-day maintenance to ensure efficient functioning of the WRF. Makes periodic inspections of the WRF equipment and facilities to determine that equipment is functioning smoothly, efficiently, and effectively. Works directly with the Chief Operator to ensure equipment is operational.
  • Plans the maintenance program and directs maintenance personnel.
