Job SummaryAssist journeyman in the planning, lay‑out, installation, testing and repair of all aspects of substation construction in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes and industry standards.
Key Responsibilities- Use hand and power tools (drill, screwdriver, pipe threader, conduit bender) to measure, cut, assemble and install electrical conduits, cable and duct banks.
- Hand‑dig ditches and holes; install control and distribution apparatus, such as switches, relays and circuit‑breaker panels; install grounding leads and pull wire through conduit.
- Work with high and low voltage systems; test continuity of circuits to ensure electrical compatibility and safety using instruments such as an ohmmeter, battery and buzzer, and oscilloscope.
- Rig and set large high‑voltage equipment, hang protective grounds, lay‑out makeup and install wire jumpers.
- Utilize equipment to excavate for foundations, lay‑out and install ground grid; spread rock, operate m‑lift in tight areas of an energized substation.
- Insert all related items per applicable plans and specifications.
- Participate in all safety‑related processes and programs; engage with the work team to achieve zero injuries; watch for hazards and report concerns to supervisor or safety professional.
- Use stop‑work authority until issues are resolved; report all accidents and near misses to supervisor; participate in investigation process.
- Participate in pre‑job work planning and safety discussions; identify hazards and take corrective action.
- Understand and respond to all safety hazards and warning devices (e.g., back‑up alarms, smoke smell, colored warning tags, warning sirens).
- Comply with lockout/tag‑out procedures; attend site‑specific training and follow all outlined procedures.
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment; use effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Perform quality work meeting requirements of plans, specifications and industry standards.
- Assist in planning, installing and repairing systems per plans and specifications; learn to perform layout independently.
- Observe installed equipment to determine hazards and need for adjustments; notify supervision of hazards and use stop‑work authority as needed.
- Inspect field conditions, identify problems and cost‑saving measures, and take corrective actions; report issues to supervision.
- Operate construction equipment correctly, maintain equipment, and complete daily inspections.
- Comply with Company Code of Conduct and jobsite policies; perform all other necessary actions.
- NCCER Construction Craft Laborer or NCCER Core Curriculum (or equivalent Craft Training Program).
- At least 1 year of experience working on substations or as an electrician or similar craft helper, or a combination of work experience and training.
- Working knowledge of substation construction, testing, maintenance and repair.
- Ability to understand and follow directions.
- Must possess all necessary tools (see Substation Helper Tool List).
- Minimum age 18.
- Complete pre‑employment onboarding requirements: background checks, drug screen, motor vehicle records search in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- NCCER Construction Craft Laborer or NCCER Core Curriculum (or equivalent Craft Training Program).
- Lift and carry heavy items weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Stand, kneel, bend, stoop, move in confined and cluttered places, and overcome uneven areas.
- Full range of motion and flexibility consistent with job duties.
- Use hands to handle, control, or feel objects, tools or controls per procedure.
- Perform repetitive movements.
- Climb and maintain balance on steel framework, stairs, ladders and scaffolds.
- Work up to a 12‑hour shift doing hard physical labor in varying temperature extremes and outdoor conditions.
