Young Adult Services Librarian, Canton Public Library (Canton)
This position is vacant due to retirements and internal promotions. We welcome librarians (as well as current students, who will soon graduate) who enjoy working with youth to apply for the YA Librarian Position. Below is a description of the responsibilities for the position:
- Plans, promotes, coordinates, conducts and provides library services and programs that respond to needs of young adults and encourages young adult reading and participation in library services and programs.
- Evaluates young adult collection for currency, balance in cultural diversity and reading accessibility and relevance to curricular needs, personal and library interests; selecting appropriate materials and resources. Performs acquisition and cataloguing of young adult materials; maintains catalog integrity and inventory control of young adult collection.
- May work with Friends of the Library to enlist support for programs related to young adults. Recommends service providers or other program resources; designs and produces print and online press releases and promotional materials; schedules support staff and volunteers; procures and provides refreshments; records attendance statistics.
- Provides guidance on school assignments and instruction in effective research methods using print, electronic and online resources; instructs patrons in interpreting search results and evaluating informational content.
- Acts as liaison with and develops partnerships among middle and secondary school and community organizations to coordinate programs and services, provide mutual support. Maintains awareness of school assignments and curricular resource needs.
- May assist with scheduling public meetings and program spaces, public workstations and providing information and logistical resources to patrons.
- Performs reference, circulation and inter‑library loan procedures. May register new borrowers, reserve materials, explain library programs, procedures and policies to patrons, respond to all requests, inquiries and/or complaints, collect fees and reconcile patron records.
- Provides training and instruction to support staff; acts for and in the absence of other staff librarians and may work with staff librarians on other related programs and services as required.
- Participates in consortium committees, monitors communications to implement and coordinate changes in policies and procedures.
- Participates in training workshops to develop appropriate knowledge, skills and abilities to improve services and adapt to change.
- Works at all public service desks and services as backup to other public departments as needed, responding to patron requests for circulation reference, and instructional services.
- Responsible for securing the building in the absence of the custodian.
- Performs similar or related work as required.
Schedule:
35 hrs/wk:
Tue 1‑9pm;
Wed‑Fri 9:30am‑5:30pm;
Alternating Mon (1‑9pm) & Sat (9:30am‑5:30pm)
Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from accredited college or university or have completed at least two-thirds of the required credits and be currently enrolled in the graduate program. One to three years of library experience or a related area or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have the ability to obtain certification from the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.
