Position SummaryThe Children’s Specialist will positively represent the Middle Georgia Regional Library with professionalism through demeanor, appearance, and interactions with the public and other staff members. They will also help develop and implement targeted library services and programming to children ages birth to 17. This position is an active member of the branch service team, providing circulation, reference, and readers’ advisory to patrons of all ages as needed.
Work hours include nights and weekends.

Additional informationThis position works under the supervision of the Branch Manager and within the parameters of the strategic plan. They have broad decision-making responsibilities for routine operational matters and some decision-making responsibilities for non-routine matters.
The successful candidate will have experience and/or knowledge of a variety of library services and activities. The position requires a high degree of flexibility to produce services that are relevant and accessible to each segment of the population that we serve. They will build community relationships and contribute to community goals.

Candidate profileThe ideal candidate will have:
- Current experience serving children and/or families
- Current knowledge of library trends
- Exceptional customer service skills and initiative
- Computer and internet skills
- Technical operational knowledge of and a willingness to learn applications of technology, such as 3D printers, Raspberry Pi, and more
- Enthusiasm
- Capability to work collaboratively and as a team player with colleagues
- Strong work ethic and ability to prioritize multiple tasks and follow through in a timely manner
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Contributes to the selection of materials for the Children’s section of the library
- Assists children and families in selecting and locating library materials
- Assists children and families in their research and information needs
- Plans and conducts programs for children to encourage reading, viewing, listening, and other use of library materials and facilities
- Confers with teachers, parents, and community and library groups to assist in developing programs to encourage and improve childrens’ use of the library and overall literacy
- Compiles statistics for library assessment and reporting
- Submits purchase requests for programming materials needs
This position serves as the supervising staff member in the Branch Manager’s absence.
Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university (preferred); or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- $18.00/hour, 37.5 hours/week
