Mō Tēnei Tūranga Mahi – About the Role Ara is looking for an Automotive Tutor to pass on their expertise and knowledge to students. Automotive Tutors deliver the fundamental automotive trade skills to groups of learners who are wanting to start an automotive apprenticeship or career. This learning is delivered in well equipped facilities through excellent educational practices.
This role offers opportunities to work with people of all ages. At Ara Automotive, we deliver to a variety of students: school students exploring vocational opportunities, full time students committed to joining the trade, apprentices learning on the job, and qualified mechanics who are upskilling.
As an Academic Staff Member – Automotive, you’ll play a key role in developing the next generation of automotive professionals. Working within Ara’s purpose built Woolston Trades Campus, you’ll teach foundational automotive skills, mentor learners at different stages of their vocational journey, and bring your industry expertise into a practical, hands on learning environment. This role blends technical skill, people leadership, and educational impact - supporting learners to gain confidence, capability, and readiness for a successful automotive career.
Don’t have teaching experience? No worries, we offer support to gain your Level 5 teaching qualification, free of charge, while you work. Pass on your knowledge to the next generation of mechanics.
You will have experience in the automotive industry with a significant amount of recent practical, hands-on experience. If you are looking to take a new step and give back to you trade by passing on your extensive knowledge to our students, this role is for you.
While teaching experience or experience training apprentices would be an advantage, at Ara we value your skills and real-world experience. Our tutors are well supported in these rewarding teaching roles and are assisted in gaining a formal teaching qualification.
What you will bring to the role- A passion for your trade
- New Zealand National Certificate L4 in Automotive Engineering or A Grade Certification or a related discipline
- Current industry knowledge
- Experience in the automotive industry. This could include auto electrical, heavy & light automotive engineering.
- Skills and experience in automotive technology related diagnostics and repair
- Excellent communication, time management and resilience
- A genuine desire to educate and mentor students
