Ara is rolling out two new nursing programmes with increased indigenous content, making nursing education at Ara future-focused and strongly aligned with health equity and Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations. These programmes reflect the updated Standards of Competency for Registered and Enrolled Nurses, ensuring our graduates are well-prepared to meet the evolving needs of Aotearoa’s health sector.

This role primarily involves teaching theory courses in both the Bachelor of Nursing and Diploma in Enrolled Nursing programmes, with the possibility of supporting students in clinical settings as required. You will design and deliver high-quality learning experiences in a tertiary context that values applied theory and practice, assess student progress, and provide academic and pastoral support. You may also contribute to teaching in the Graduate Certificate of Nursing and articulation programmes.

The successful candidate will be research active, advancing a programme of research that aligns with Ara’s strategic goals and the nursing programmes on offer. Your research interests will inform your teaching and contribute to the ongoing development of nursing education at Ara.

Ngā Pūkenga Me Ngā Wheako – Skills and Experience
  • Registered Nurse with current NZ Practicing Certificate
  • A postgraduate qualification, preferably a master’s degree in Nursing or related discipline (or an approved plan to complete within 4 years).
  • Current industry/discipline knowledge in general nursing such as acute medical‑surgical, rehabilitation, primary health care, older persons health.
  • A minimum of three years full time clinical experience as a registered nurse.
  • Clinical and educational qualifications or skills that support teaching of nursing.
  • Research interests to support scholarship in fields relevant to nursing and education.
  • A broad range of clinical practice and skills.
  • Vision, innovation and a commitment to facilitating own and others’ learning.
  • Capable of supporting students to achieve their learning outcomes.
  • The ability to develop and implement flexible teaching and learning methods, including the use of learning technologies.
  • Passionate about nursing and the opportunities to improve practice or give back to nursing through education.
  • An established level of cross‑cultural competency, particularly in tikanga Māori and te Reo will be beneficial.
  • Recognition of the importance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Mātauranga Māori, and mana whenua values and practices, in advancing a more sustainable, just and equitable health care in Aotearoa New Zealand.
