Becoming Childminder

Overview

Childminding has become one of the most important aspects of any working mother’s life. The demand for reliable, qualified childminders is growing, and as regulations evolve, all childminders must be registered and assessed before bringing children into their care.

• Set your own fees and working hours.
• Provide safe, stimulating environments for children.
• Display and maintain your Ofsted accreditation, including the required certificate.
• Adhere to all Ofsted guidelines and local authority requirements.
• Manage financial aspects of a self‑employed business, including taxes and National Insurance contributions.

• Enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check – mandatory for anyone working with children.
• Paediatric first‑aid certificate.
• Completion of an introductory childminding course approved by Ofsted.
• Option to complete the Introduction to Childcare Practice (ICP) module and progress to a Diploma in Home‑Based Childcare (NVQ Level 3 equivalent).
• Practical experience with children in a home or childcare setting.

As a childminder you are a self‑employed provider. You may apply for a start‑up grant to cover initial costs, but you remain responsible for your own tax liabilities and National Insurance contributions. If you wish to care for more than six children, you must re‑apply to Ofsted for an expanded registration.
