POSITION FUNCTION

Coordinate and participate in the work of an asphalt road repair crew.

KEY DUTIES

Coordinate, assign, review and participate in the work of approximately 2-3 staff involved in the repair of asphalt road surfaces; ensure schedules, procedures and established performance and safety standards are met; provide employee training and input to employee performance appraisals; complete time sheets, crew talks, equipment logs and work orders.

Operate a truck equipped to transport crew and equipment and for transporting and dispensing hot mixed asphalt; check and adjust thermostat and oil levels in heating system; empty and spray hot box with diesel oil daily; operate various power equipment such as jackhammer, target saw, crack sealer, asphalt sprayer and infra-red heater; construct or repair asphalt road surfaces, concrete road base, utility castings and specially designed features;

read and interpret engineering plans and grade sheets to locate and mark out underground services; direct the operation of construction and excavation equipment.

Perform pre- and post-trip inspections by checking items such as fluid levels, belts, hoses and lights; report repairs needed and damage to supervisor and mechanic shop; clean vehicle and equipment; check first aid and safety equipment.

Determine materials, staff resources and equipment required daily; order materials and equipment by contacting Public Works dispatcher; complete equipment rental and material slips; coordinate work and review job matters and schedules with other sections and utilities; respond to enquiries and complaints from the public.

Perform snow and ice removal functions using a skid steer loader or a service truck equipped with a sanding unit, brine unit or snowplow.

Perform related duties where qualified.

INDEPENDENCE

Work is assigned by supervisor and reviewed upon completion.

Problems such as unprepared job sites and equipment breakdowns are referred to supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:

High school graduation.

Current and valid Class 3 . Driver’s Licence with air brake endorsement.

Experience:

3 years of paving experience including some supervisory experience.

or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

OTHER:

May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
