CHIEF ZZEH GITTLIT SCHOOL (CZG S ) - Old Crow
Chief Zzeh Gittlit School (CZG) respectfully acknowledges that it is located within the traditional territory of the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation.
CZG is located in the community of Old Crow, Yukon Territory. Old Crow is a remote, fly-in community in northern Yukon, 112 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. Approximately 250 people live in Old Crow. Approximately 50 active students attend CZG and most are members of the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation. Gwich'in is the traditional language of the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation people.
CZG is committed to ensuring it provides each student with engaging, culturally relevant, and socially responsible conditions for learning. Students in Old Crow have access to a tremendously rich natural environment within easy reach of the school. Within our school day we encourage academic learning through outdoor education and land-based cross-curricular teachings. Older students and staff go out on the land to participate in multiple hunting and harvesting trips;
some meat from these harvests are contributed to the community and to the school's daily lunch program. As well, every year, all CZG students take part in the spring Culture Camp that includes a unique land-based experiential program that combines the teaching of both traditional Gwitchin culture and knowledge and Yukon academic learning outcomes.
CZG has multi-grade classrooms: an Early Kindergarten-Kindergarten classroom, Grade 1-3 classroom, Grade 4-5 classroom, a Grade 6-8 classroom, and a 9-12 ILC hybrid course high school learning classroom. CZG is one of 11 Yukon schools that have joined the newly established First Nation School Board (FNSB) in the Yukon. We are actively seeking committed and qualified educators who are dedicated to living in and being an active member of the community and who can adapt well to a remote lifestyle.
Our educational professionals value authentic relationships and are committed to working with students, community, administration and the FNSB to make positive, progressive changes to education outcomes for learners of Old Crow.
