Shubenacadie is a small community in Nova Scotia, Canada, known for its strong Mi’kmaq heritage, connections to the Shubenacadie River, and rural character. It is located within the Municipality of East Hants, in Hants County.
The name Shubenacadie is derived from the Mi’kmaq word Sipekne'katik, meaning "place abounding in groundnuts". The area has been a significant Mi’kmaq territory for thousands of years and is home to the Sipekne'katik First Nation, a vibrant and growing community that is one of the largest Mi'kmaq bands in Nova Scotia.
Shubenacadie was the location of the Maritime's only residential school, which operated from 1930 to 1967. The site of the former school is now a National Historic Site, memorializing the painful legacy of forced assimilation and abuse endured by Indigenous children from across Atlantic Canada.
For thousands of years, the Shubenacadie River served as a vital transportation route for the Mi’kmaq people. During the industrial era, the Shubenacadie Canal was built to connect Halifax Harbour to the Bay of Fundy, though it no longer serves an industrial purpose. Today, the waterway is a recreational and heritage site managed by the Shubenacadie Canal Commission.
Natural attractions and activities
Tidal bore:
The community is a prime location to witness the Shubenacadie tidal bore, a natural phenomenon created by the Bay of Fundy's incoming tide. Visitors can experience this unique event through guided tidal bore rafting adventures.
Shubenacadie Wildlife Park: A popular destination, this park features native Nova Scotian wildlife and offers educational programs for visitors.
Shubenacadie Canal Waterway:
This heritage waterway offers trails for hiking and biking, and its waters are used for paddling.
Recreational activities:
Other local activities include golfing at The Links at Penn Hills Golf Club and exploring Laurie Provincial Park.
Practicing in Nova Scotia
Physicians in Nova Scotia provide fulfilling patient care which embraces family life, professional development and community involvement. That's what makes practicing medicine in Nova Scotia unique. Physicians are increasingly attracted to practices that offer team-based care to their patients and allow them to consult with their peers. The size and scale of Nova Scotia allows for better connections across the health care system.
Your practice of medicine and your life is richer here. Nova Scotia is more than medicine.
Building a Diverse Workforce
The Physician Recruitment Team at Nova Scotia Health lives and works in Mi’kma’ki, the unceded and ancestral territory of the Mi’kmaq people. We are dedicated to equity, diversity, inclusion, and truth and reconciliation, and we are working to support medical communities that are reflective of and responsive to the diverse populations they serve in Nova Scotia. We welcome physicians from diverse backgrounds and experiences to join us in building healthier, more equitable communities across the province.
