Overview
The City of Campbell is recruiting for our next Assistant Director of Public Works - City Engineer! Under direction of the Public Works Director, the Assistant Public Works Director - City Engineer plans and manages the activities of the Engineering Division of the Public Works Department; and may act in the Public Works Director capacity in their absence.
About The Public Works Department The Public Works Department is committed to providing high quality, cost effective, design, construction, and maintenance services for the City’s infrastructure and programs to enhance the quality of life for residents in the City of Campbell. The Public Works Department includes Engineering (Administration, Design and Construction, Land Development, Traffic Engineering), Environmental Management (Solid Waste, Storm Water, Recycling, Organics, Hazardous Waste), and Maintenance (Administration, City Facilities, Parks, Signals and Lighting, Streets, Vehicles and Equipment).
The Department has close to 50 staff members comprised of professional engineers, inspectors, administrators, and maintenance personnel with an annual budget of approximately $15 million in fiscal year 2025/2026.

The Engineering Division: The Engineering Division includes the following sections:
Design and Construction, Environmental Services, Land Development, and Traffic Engineering. The Assistant Public Works Director-City Engineer will be involved in the review and revision of City standards for design of public works construction and in developing departmental policies and procedures; signs plans, maps, and documents as appropriate; preparing Council reports and making public presentations; assisting in the preparation of the City’s Capital Improvement Program and department operating budget;
and assisting the Public Works Director in the planning, organization, and review of department functions and work plan preparation. The Assistant Public Works Director-City Engineer may also represent the department in the absence of the Director, as assigned.
The Ideal Candidate The Assistant Public Works Director-City Engineer will be excited to take on a broad range of responsibilities requiring considerable knowledge of current engineering science and practice including: research of engineering problems; initial project planning, scheduling and budget development; design development and construction cost estimating; analysis of environmental impacts; and the development and implementation of public information and record keeping programs for the administration of major public works projects.
The ideal candidate is a collaborative and engaging leader with a strong background in design and construction, land development, environmental services, transportation and some level of operations and maintenance experience.
Skills The successful candidate is an experienced engineer who demonstrates strong communication and interpersonal skills, sense of work ownership, and enthusiasm for innovation. This is a professional who is an accessible leader who fosters a positive and collaborative work environment, provides clear direction and constructive feedback, enjoys managing and mentoring staff, and actively listen and empower their team to excel while holding staff accountable.
They will also have a proven record of effective and efficient communicator with ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing with a range of audiences, including City officials and elected officials and demonstrated ability to interact with the community and other departments, consultants, contractors and external agencies. Typical duties will include, but are not limited to:
- Plans, organizes, assigns, manages and evaluates the activities of the Engineering Division;
- Manages division personnel, consultant and contract resources;
- Participates with other department managers to develop, plan, implement and report the department's goals;
- Leads, directs, monitors and evaluates division staff and provides for their training and professional development;
- Clarifies roles and responsibilities of division staff in meeting Engineering Division goals and facilitates goal setting, scheduling and monitoring of Public Works projects;
