Under the direction of the Training Manager, the swim instructor at Sutton Swim School (SSS) is responsible for teaching swim lessons that reflect SSS's high standards for safety, skill development, and a positive learning environment. The instructor collaborates closely with team members and holds primary responsibility for the safety, engagement, and progress of each student in their care. This role is carried out with integrity, teamwork, initiative, and a strong commitment to serving the community.
The instructor demonstrates leadership and technical skills through effective communication, collaboration, and professional conduct, fostering a welcoming and supportive atmosphere for students, families, and staff alike.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Safety First, Teamwork, Positive Attitude, and Lifelong Learning. - Know, understand, and consistently apply all SSS policies, swim instructor standards, safety guidelines, and emergency procedures.
- Welcome students, parents, and staff with warmth and professionalism, fostering positive relationships and a sense of community they want to be a part of.
- Prepare for and deliver lessons according to the SSS curriculum, ensuring each swimmer's safety and progress.
- Explain and visually demonstrate water safety skills and swimming strokes to students of various ages and abilities.
- Communicate regularly with the Deck Staff regarding lesson structure, student progress, and professional development needs.
- Assess students' abilities, recommend advancement, and maintain awareness of each child's skill level and needs.
- Ensure students' progress though the SSS curriculum in a timely and supportive manner.
- Learn and use each student's name to create a welcoming environment.
- Serve as a positive role model for students and staff through professional behavior and attitude.
- Address student behavior issues or disputes promptly and constructively.
- Maintain and organize teaching equipment, report any damage to the Deck Manager, and help keep the facility clean and safe.
- Participate in ongoing training, personal swim development and staff meetings as scheduled.
- Arrive at the pool at least 15 minutes before your scheduled lesson time.
- Perform other job-related duties as needed, including substituting for coworkers when necessary.
Must be 18 years of age with at least one year of work experience. Available to work at least 3 days a week. Ability to work flexible hours during evenings and weekends (Must be available. Emotional maturity and enjoyment of being in the water. Ability to instruct in the pool for up to 4 hours per day. Genuine interest in working with children and supporting their character development.
At least one year of experience working with children, educational classes, swimming, youth programs, recreation or a related field is preferred. Personal alignment with SSS's Core Values (Safety First, Teamwork, Positive Attitude, and Lifelong Learning.)
