Sr Electrician​/Maintenance Mechanic

Overview

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Sr Electrician / Maintenance Mechanic for the Division of Institutional Planning & Operations (IP&O). The position works independently in a “zone”, or as the only Electrician/Maintenance Mechanic on a campus, reporting directly to a second line supervisor, or guides and instructs a group of Electrician/Maintenance Mechanics in electrical and mechanical duties for all University facilities.

Responsible for estimating work and procuring materials for self or the group. May guide and instruct craft trainees and perform duties of the group. May be assigned to other trade areas as needed.

• Plan and coordinate electrical duties including installation and repair of wiring, fixtures, lighting, control and alarm systems.
• Repair and maintain generators and motors; install electrical conduits.
• Perform duties of Electrician/Maintenance Mechanic; assist with 480-volt switch gear and wiring.
• Maintain clean shop and work areas; detect equipment faults and report conditions to supervisor; issue work orders as needed.
• Conduct inventory of equipment, materials, and supplies; advise management when to reorder stock.
• Estimate work time and prepare material lists for self or the group; provide materials as needed.
• Provide guidance and instruction to craft trainees; work in a zone or as the sole Electrician/Maintenance Mechanic on a campus when not leading a group.
• Repair and maintain University equipment and facilities; prioritize and estimate work; notify supervisor of emergent problems.
• Perform scheduled repair and preventive maintenance on various University properties and equipment.

Minimum Education and Experience

• High school or vocational education or equivalent.

Certifications/Licenses

• Must be a qualified journeyman electrician registered with the State of New Jersey or have completed an apprenticeship program approved by the US Department of Labor (minimum 3 years).
• Must maintain journeyman certification while in job title.
• Valid driver’s license with two years driving experience.
• Must successfully complete the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Competence in repairing and maintaining electrical equipment and circuitry, including industrial power wiring and 480-volt switch gear.
• Good communication skills; ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds; ability to read and interpret technical manuals and blueprints.

Preferred Qualifications

• May be required to obtain Commercial Driver’s License.
