Direct responsibility for the daily operations of assigned department(s); including but not limited to: overseeing daily practice operations, recruitment, retention, adherence to policies and procedures, support ongoing education of staff, ensure compliance with policies and procedures, and responsible for fiscal responsibility of unit/department.

The Trauma/Surgical ICU (TSICU) is a 28-bed critical care unit specializing in caring for traumatically injured patients or those undergoing complex surgeries requiring close monitoring and care. Patients are admitted directly from the ED, the Ross Trauma Admitting Area, or the operating room. Patients usually cared for in this area include those with traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, rib fractures, and lung injuries, as well as diverse orthopedic injuries requiring frequent monitoring and care.

Many patients cared for in the TSICU are poly-trauma patients, with injuries involving more than one body system. Common surgical patients include those undergoing Whipple procedures, esophagectomies, gastrostomies, and abdominal aortic aneurysms. The unit is staffed with registered nurses, critical care technicians, trauma surgery nurse practitioners, resident physicians, and attending trauma surgeons. Staff also work closely with respiratory therapists and specialized surgical groups such as orthopedics and neurosurgery.

Nurses and critical care technicians working in this area receive education specific to the trauma patient s care.

• 3-5 years of clinical nursing experience, with demonstrated leadership abilities. 6-10 years preferred.
• Requires strong planning skills and a solid understanding of Patient and Family Centered Care.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.

• Graduate from an NLN accredited school of nursing.
• BSN required.
• MSN preferred.

• Current New Jersey license as a Registered Nurse, BLS certification.
• National certification preferred within area of specialty for critical care, operating room, endoscopy and trauma.
• Certain specialties may require advanced certification (e.g., ACLS, NRP, PALS).
• Certification within specialty area preferred (CCRN, CMSRN, CNOR, CEN, PCCN, CNML, NE-BC…).
