The post of Student Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (School Nurse) is a development post building on existing knowledge, skills and competencies to achieve a higher level of practice resulting in an academic qualification as well as a registerable qualification with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Nurses work closely with the people who use our services, their families, friends and carers and play an important contribution in how people experience our services. Nurses are expected to be kind and responsive but professional and informative and contribute to the quality of the services we provide by:

  • Keeping the people who using our services as safe as possible through the use of sound clinical skills and effective risk assessments.
  • Ensuring the best possible clinical outcomes by using up-to-date skills and adhering to evidence based policies and procedure.

Main duties of the job

This is an opportunity for qualified NMC registered nurses to apply for the SCPHN course for School Nursing commencing in September 2026 at King's College London.

This is a fully funded training opportunity, to qualify as a registered Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (School Nurse) and is open to all registered qualified Nurses. You will be given a fixed term one year full-time contract to undertake a PGDip Specialist Community Public Health Nurse course (School Nursing), find attached Job Description and Person Specification.

Job responsibilities

Student School Nurses contribute to the provision of safe and reliable services by:

  • Using their clinical judgement and risk assessments to keep the people using our services as safe as possible
  • Safeguarding people by recognising and responding when a child or adult might be at risk from abuse but also recognising their own limits and asking for help and elevate concerns when necessary
  • Escalating safety concerns and by doing so acting as effective advocates for those who use our services
  • Being open and transparent about their own practice
  • Supervising the work of others
  • Reflecting on everyday practice to identify areas where improvements in safety or quality can be made
  • Working with others to create a culture of continuous improvement
  • Maintaining compliance with their mandatory training requirements.
Person Specification Education
  • oCurrent NMC Registration for nursing or midwifery
  • oEvidence of application for NMC registration and confirmed NMC registration within 2 months of the start date
  • o Degree or DipHE (or above) qualification equivalent to 120 credits at level 5 (of the Higher Education Credit Framework for England) with evidence of continual professional development at level 6
  • o Literacy and Numeracy at the level of the National Qualifications Framework at level 1-2 for Numeracy (equivalent of GCSE) and 3-4 for Literacy (equivalent of A level)
Experience
  • oExperience of working within multi-disciplinary teams
  • oEvidence of involvement in the management of difficult situations and conflict resolution
  • oExperience of managing staff within a team
  • oEvidence of working without direct supervision and managing own workload
  • oExperience of working with children and families
  • oExperience of working in the community
  • oNursing/midwifery post registration experience
Skills
  • oAcademic ability to study independently at degree or postgraduate level
  • oExcellent, adaptable communication skills both written and verbal
  • oNumeracy and Literacy skills
  • oAbility to support children and families to make informed decisions in relation to their health and well-being
  • oDemonstrate ability to adapt to working within a changing environment
  • oDemonstrate knowledge of research - based practice
  • oEvidence of supporting equality and valuing diversity in own practice
  • oKnowledge of the public health role of contemporary health visiting & working in community settings
  • oKnowledge of local and national policies which influence the provision of health visiting

  • oKnowledge of quality issues, the audit process and clinical governance

  • oThe ability to travel to a variety of sites within the Trust is essential
