English Teacher / ESL TEFL
This is a freelance/self-employed position. There are no fixed hours. Hours are offered depending on student numbers and bookings and will be mutually agreed between the Head of Teaching and the teacher. Teachers invoice for the time worked and receive payment on the final working day of the month.
As a British Council-accredited centre, we follow strict hiring guidelines to ensure high teaching standards. As a minimum, applicants must have a TEFL I qualification, such as Cambridge CELTA
, Trinity CertTESOL
, or a relevant MA in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, or a related field. We cannot consider candidates who do not meet these requirements.
- Teach general English, and/or exam courses to international students aged 11-18.
- Liaise with other members of the teaching team and Head of Teaching in discussing the needs of the students, preparing suitable materials and lessons.
- Complete a scheme of work and weekly timetable for each week.
- Fill in the register for each class and ensure absences are reported.
- Write up a record of work covered after every class.
- Conduct first day placement testing and invigilation when necessary, and mark placement tests when required.
- Complete end of course reports and sign certificates for individual students as directed.
- Participate in CPD, including observation and peer observation.
- Regularly attend short meetings at reasonable times.
- Report any student welfare concerns to the Safeguarding team, following the correct procedure.
- Understand the teachers’ role in safeguarding young learners and provide pastoral support when necessary.
- Substitute for other teachers in cases absence as mutually agreed with the Head of Teaching, ensuring all cover paperwork is completed.
- Inform the Head of Teaching in writing of any dates which cannot be worked as soon as possible and advise the substitute teacher of teaching point(s) and materials to be covered.
- Undertake other tasks as from time to time deemed necessary by the Director of The English Experience School.
Please note that payment is calculated according to teaching hours. Teachers are expected to be at the school so that they can liaise with other teachers, be available to students and other staff members, attend staff meetings, and plan their work using the school’s resources. All teaching hours are 60 minutes, and breaks are unpaid. Teaching hourly rate is dependent on teaching qualification:
- CELTA or TEFL I equivalent: £21.50 per hour
- DELTA or TEFL Q equivalent: £23.50 per hour
