Job Summary
Temporary hourly position without benefits. The City of Santa Monica provides a deferred compensation (457) retirement plan for its as‑needed employees who are not eligible for coverage under CalPERS. The City and the employee are each required to contribute 3.75% of wages to the plan, deducted on a pre‑tax basis.
Job duties include testing, calibrating, cleaning, repairing, and maintaining water meters and detector checks in the shop and in the field; investigating and responding to service order complaints; notifying the public of water service shut‑downs; installing, maintaining, and repairing the water distribution system as necessary.
Representative Duties- Remove, dismantle, reassemble, and install water meters and detector checks of up to 8 inches.
- Replace gaskets, nuts, bolts, and valves; replace damaged meter boxes and vault sections.
- Perform water distribution construction repairs, including leak repair, main break repairs, and replacement of curb stops under pressure.
- Retrofit meter and detector installations for new meters and above‑ground installations.
- Assist with installation of fire lines, hydrants, domestic water services, and water meters.
- Operate and maintain butterfly and gate valves; perform fire‑line checks and trim‑valve operation.
- Respond to emergency calls for main breaks and wastewater stoppages, investigate and locate water system problems, and perform repairs.
- Execute temporary and emergency water shut‑downs.
- Read and interpret water meters, blueprints, sketches, and distribution maps.
- Record and retrieve water meter readings and route information using an online computer program and handheld microcomputer.
- Monitor and identify trouble codes for leaks and abnormal consumption.
- Maintain records and logs; inventory and maintain stock of materials and supplies.
- Follow traffic safety rules and set up traffic control devices; follow applicable health and safety rules and regulations.
- Respond to customer inquiries and complaints in a tactful and effective manner.
- Assume duties of Water Supervisors‑Meters when absent, as assigned; perform other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge: Installation and repair techniques for water distribution systems; operation of meters; construction methods; plumbing and hydraulics principles; basic mathematics; training and customer service techniques; applicable codes and regulations.
Skills: Identify, repair, and troubleshoot meter problems; install and repair distribution components; read and understand blueprints and schematics; operate tools, trucks, hand and power tools; communicate orally and in writing; operate a personal computer and software applications; provide effective customer service; collaborate with City employees and the public.
Education and Experience: High school diploma or equivalent; two years of recent paid work experience repairing water meters or similar mechanical equipment, or one year of recent paid experience performing related water distribution repair and maintenance work.
Licenses and Certificates: Valid class C driver’s license; class B driver’s license within one year of hire;
Grade D 1 Water Distribution Certificate issued by the California Department of Health Services within one year of hire.
