Position: ENVIRONMENTAL COMPLIANCE SPECIALIST

WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR II/III

Level II: $51,262 – $62,310 Yearly
Level III: $58,945 - $71,648 Yearly

Job Overview

Under supervision, operate and maintain a surface water treatment plant and groundwater well treatment facility. Independently monitor treatment plant and well treatment facility operations, interpret and document data by reading plant equipment gauges, dials, graphs, SCADA, and other instrumentation. Make necessary adjustments to maintain chemical feed rates, proper reservoir levels and pressure zones; collect water samples and perform routine chemical and physical tests;

calculate results using standard equations and data. Perform routine preventative maintenance and repairs to chemical feed systems, pumps and motors, valves and other water treatment facility equipment and facilities. Plan and execute maintenance projects from design to installation. Under minimal supervision perform servicing of plant equipment and facilities including major and minor repairs when necessary. Work with contractors and vendors as required.

Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures; perform other work as required.

Note:

Offers of employment may be made at the Water Treatment Plant Operator Grade II level, Grade T2 WTPO certification. Incumbents must be available to work shifts including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Employment Standards

Knowledge of: Established procedures and tools used for operating and maintaining valves, pumps, filters, chemical feeders, electric motors, and clarifiers. Routine chemical tests necessary in water treatment process such as chlorine residual, turbidity, taste and odor. Routine maintenance and cleaning of treatment plant equipment and facilities.

Ability to: Apply established water treatment procedures to formulate conclusions regarding operations and maintenance of treatment plant equipment and facilities; perform routine chemical tests, preventative maintenance and repairs; maintain operations and maintenance records for log gauge readings, chemical test results, and maintenance performed on equipment; read, record, interpret, and respond to information in the plant log; cooperate with staff when accomplishing duties;

direct and train operations personnel; follow verbal and written instructions; respond to public inquiries and/or complaints; follow established safety practices.

Experience/Training: Three years of increasingly responsible experience performing potable water treatment operation and maintenance duties. Completion of the twelfth grade (or equivalent) supplemented by additional courses or training in water treatment operations and plant maintenance.

License Requirements: Applicant must possess a valid California Driver's License at time of appointment.

Certification Requirements: Possession of a minimum of a Grade T2 Water Treatment Plant Operator's Certificate issued by the State of California at the time of appointment, with the ability to get a Grade T3 WTPO certification within two years of appointment.

Environmental Conditions: Positions in this class have periodic to frequent exposure to disagreeable working conditions including chemicals, machinery, computer screens, noise, dirt, fumes, vibration, heat, cold and dampness.

Physical Standards: Positions in this class require light physical work with frequent standing and walking, lifting/carrying objects weighing up to 25 to 50 pounds, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, distinguishing sounds of equipment, and the ability to discriminate colors.
