Job Description
  • Serve as the first point of contact representing HUDS, maintaining a positive working relationship with students, faculty and guests.
  • Operate Microsand or Blackboard workstation.
  • Swipe all  as required.
  • Process all payment methods including cash, crimson cash and board plus.
  • Process function counts and all meal replacement orders.
  • Complete cash drawer audit at the beginning and reconcile at the end of each shift.
  • Request appropriate denominations prior to opening of the shift and during meal periods.
  • Deposit and submit paperwork, cash and meal tickets to secure site or management.
  • Utilize knowledge of food allergies and intolerances to direct students to safe menu items and storage areas.
  • Read and write the daily menu board and be familiar with food items served.
  • Monitor serving lines during meals to ensure quality and quantity meet demand.
  • Support all events as assigned (setup, execution, cleanup).
  • Maintain cleanliness of dining room throughout the day, practicing clean‑as‑you‑go procedures.
  • Keep tables, chairs, table tents, napkin dispensers and salt and pepper shakers clean.
  • Refill napkins, salt and pepper shakers as needed.
  • Update table tents as directed.
  • Assist in server area with set‑up and in dining areas as needed.
  • Set up front‑of‑house stations per unit guidelines (pastries, brews, coffee, salad bar, etc.).
  • Separate all necessary menu identifiers and utensils for each meal.
  • Complete dessert preparation prior to meal service and set up/breakdown displays.
  • Report malfunctioning equipment to management.
  • Leave workstation clean and restocked.
  • Recycle products per policy and procedure.
  • Accurately fill out sanitation and temperature logs and food service records.
  • Follow sanitation standards in compliance with regulatory agencies.
  • Communicate effectively and work cooperatively with a diverse staff, management and guests.
  • Comply with State of Massachusetts and Dining Services’ “Food Employee Illness Policy”.
  • Represent HUDS to students, faculty, staff and guests professionally.
  • Work to meet the mission and core values of Harvard University Dining Services with enthusiasm and cooperation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to routinely lift 50 lbs. without restrictions.
  • Continuous: standing, walking, lifting, manual dexterity, reaching, handling, bending.
  • Frequent: push/pull, ascending and descending stairs and ladders.
  • Occasional: climbing, squatting, sitting, kneeling.
Qualifications
  • Basic Qualifications
    • High School Diploma or equivalent.
    • Proficiency in the English language (speaking, reading, writing).
    • Two years of experience in commercial food service or hospitality industry.
    • Basic computer skills and ability to learn business applications.
    • Basic math skills for cash handling and basic fiscal tasks.
    • Ability to handle customer inquiries in person and on the telephone promptly.
    • Ability to follow directions.
    • Neat appearance and comply with HUDS dress code.
  • Additional Qualifications and Skills
    • Serv Safe certification within one year of employment.
    • Previous experience in a university environment preferred.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Strong multi‑tasking skills.
    • Excellent communication skills.
    • Work cooperatively and respectfully with diverse staff, management and guests.
