The researcher will work in support of the Re-Engineering Economic Statistics using Economic Transactions (RESET) project under the direction of John Haltwanger (University of Maryland) and Matthew Shapiro (University of Maryland), with responsibilities including developing methods, conducting data preparation and data analysis, and preparing research findings for publication as well as independent research related to RESET. The researcher will also participate in networking activities related to economic measurement, interact closely with partners in statistical agencies and firms providing data, and assist in documenting and disseminating research results.

This postdoctoral position is intended for individuals who are completing or have recently completed a Ph.D. in economics or a closely related discipline whose research relates to cutting-edge topics relevant to economic measurement including machine learning, firm and product dynamics, and estimation of production function or demand systems. PhDs in computer science or data science with exceptionally strong backgrounds in economics will also be considered.

Previous research on economic measurement would be highly desirable; interest in applying economics and data science to economic measurement is essential. Strong programming skills, experience with the management and analysis of large datasets and eligibility for Special Sworn Status with the U.S. Census Bureau are required.

A starting date between May and September 2026 is anticipated, though a starting date as early as January 1, 2026 is possible. Applicants must have completed their PhD requirements by the anticipated start date. An appointment of one year is anticipated, with the possibility of a second year. Employment is contingent on continuing availability of funding. The researcher will work in person in either Ann Arbor, MI or the Washington, DC metro area.

The NBER may be able to sponsor the researcher for an H1B visa.
