Job Description

The Advancement Officer works to implement strategic development, communications and outreach initiatives and support efforts to secure and manage diverse funding streams for the Center for Health Law and Policy Innovation (CHLPI) of Harvard Law School. In collaboration with CHLPI leadership and staff, the Advancement Officer will support grant and donor activities and CHLPI’s strategic development efforts to manage CHLPI’s robust and complex funding portfolio.

The Advancement Officer will serve to support a dynamic center that conducts public interest and clinical teaching in the food and health law fields. The work in the center includes both independent and collaborative teamwork in growing areas of local, national, and global importance. As Advancement Officer, you will:

  • Plan and implement development activities to secure and maintain funding from foundations, corporations, government agencies, and individuals.
  • Collaborate with CHLPI’s staff to develop, draft, and edit grant proposals and reports and relevant budgets; track and manage deadlines, reports, and deliverables for all grants; steward relationships with current funders.
  • Responsible for submitting all proposals and grant reports to potential and current funders on time; learn and utilize all external systems (e.g., funder portals) and internal systems (e.g., Harvard GMAS) for completing these tasks.
  • Perform prospect research to identify, evaluate and assist with securing funding from diverse foundations, corporations, individual donors, and governmental agencies; cultivate relationships with prospective funders.
  • Push forward CHLPI’s strategic development goals and plans, ensuring their alignment with other organizational strategic goals in areas of program, communications, and finance.
  • Liaise with Harvard departments and staff to complete advancement and development tasks and goals such as with colleagues in finance, sponsored research, and gifts management.
  • Coordinate accuracy, uniformity, and consistent messaging in all proposal and report submissions, and communications and development fundraising collateral.
  • Support coordinated administrative team functions and activities to maximize CHLPI’s organizational objectives; contribute to administrative tasks that further CHLPI’s development goals.
Qualifications

Basic Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required. Minimum five years of experience in development, fundraising, advancement, or related fields.

Additional Qualifications and Skills

We are looking for people who have:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • An understanding of prospect research principles and practices for securing grants and other fundraising opportunities; knowledge of fundraising information sources.
  • A high level of professionalism, collegiality, flexibility, and creativity.
  • Superior writing and editing skills.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously, working both independently and in teams.
  • Experience working with colleagues of diverse backgrounds and a commitment to prioritizing a purpose-driven approach in their work.
Additional Information

Appointment End Date: This is a one-year term appointment with potential for renewal, subject to departmental funding and need.

Standard Hours/

Schedule:

35 hours per week, Full-Time M-F.
