Director, Operations - KCO and Xavier Lab

Join to apply for the Director, Operations - KCO and Xavier Lab role at Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard.

The Broad Institute brings together a collaborative community of researchers from MIT, Harvard, and affiliated hospitals with the mission of advancing the understanding and treatment of human disease, applying our deep knowledge of human genetics to empower a revolution in biomedicine and accelerate the pace at which the world conquers disease.

The Xavier Lab combines cutting‑edge technologies with molecular biology, immunology, genomics, and systems biology. Our research focuses on translating human genetics to functional biology; generating systems‑wide maps within the gut that capture immune features and metabolic states at single‑cell resolution; determining the influences of the gut microbiome on health and disease using human cohorts and computational models; and identifying and placing new cellular receptors within pathway biology and leveraging chemical biology to test therapeutic hypotheses and inform drug discovery programs.

The Director of Operations serves as a trusted strategic partner to senior leadership, overseeing operational performance, coordinating lab‑wide initiatives, and ensuring that administrative and strategic priorities advance efficiently. This individual is responsible for driving execution, improving cross‑functional workflows, supporting decision‑making, and fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement. This role requires exceptional organizational leadership, scientific or research‑environment fluency, and the ability to operate with sound judgment in a complex, fast‑paced, research‑focused institution.

Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as a strategic advisor to senior leadership, helping shape priorities, organizational plans, and long‑range initiatives.
  • Oversee daily operational activities across functional areas (administration, sponsored research, finance, legal and HR).
  • Partner with scientific and administrative leaders to identify operational challenges and implement solutions.
  • Partner with scientific and operational leadership to ensure administrative functions proactively support evolving research priorities.
  • Drive continuous improvement efforts, promoting efficiency, transparency, and effective communication across teams.
  • Oversee budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, and financial planning across the lab.
  • Ensure strong internal controls, compliance with reporting requirements, and responsible stewardship of institutional resources.
  • Support strategic resource allocation and long‑range financial planning in collaboration with senior leadership.
  • Support annual budgeting and resource planning processes in partnership with finance and program leadership.
  • Monitor budgets, staffing allocations, space planning, and operational expenditures to ensure alignment with strategic priorities.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree; advanced degree preferred (MBA, MPH, MPA, MS/PhD in a scientific field, or related discipline).
  • At least 10 years of progressively responsible experience in operations, strategic planning, project management, or program leadership, preferably within a research, academic, biomedical, or nonprofit environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex, cross‑functional initiatives and manage multiple high‑priority projects simultaneously.
  • Exceptional communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively at all organizational levels.
  • Understanding of budgeting, research operations, grant management and laboratory operations.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and systems‑thinking capabilities.
  • Prior experience serving as a comparable executive‑level operations leader.
  • Proven track record of team leadership and organizational development.
