Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker

Reports To: Deputy Chief, Student Mental Health and Counseling Services

The licensed independent clinical social worker (LICSW) provides individual and group counseling to undergraduate and graduate MIT Health patients within a team model. The LICSW will assess patient mental health status through interview and synthesize this clinical information to formulate mental health status, diagnosis, development of plan of care and treatment, implementation of treatment plan, and evaluation of follow up strategies according to age‑specific plans of care.

Experience treating eating disorders is desirable although not necessary. The work is done in accordance with MIT Health Policies as well as State and Federal rules, regulations, and standard of care. The LICSW also provides health education and clinical outreach to the MIT community in collaboration with other individuals or services at MIT Health as well as across the campus community.

After‑hours on‑call is required for this position. Some walk‑in clinic coverage may be required at times.

• Promotes high‑value mental health care (assessment, crisis intervention, short‑term individual and group psychotherapy) for undergraduate and graduate patients of MIT Health; assures timely access to care, is attentive to patient experience and cost of care; utilizes shared decision making when appropriate to establish a plan of care.
• Functions independently to perform age‑appropriate history and clinical assessment of patients.
• Assesses health status through interview and review of the medical record as evidenced by documentation in the medical record and presentation.
• Demonstrates assessment and management skills for common ambulatory psychiatric care complaints, such as preventative care, wellness care and care of chronic psychiatric illnesses.
• Triages emergencies and coordinates transfer of patients to emergency room when needed.
• Effectively uses clinical judgment and consultation to identify health problems and treatment strategies as documented in the medical record and case presentation.
• Documents professionally and in a timely manner, the subjective and the objective data and the clinical impressions and plan of care formulated during the patient encounter; documentation must support any E&M or CPT codes for the encounter.
• Engages in campus outreach and community education related to mental health issues.
• Serves as a mental health consultant to other University partners and stakeholders, and a community referral resource for students.
• Engages professionally with patients, colleagues, and other staff.
• All other duties as assigned.

• Master’s Degree from Social Work from an institution accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
• Minimum of 2 years post Master’s Degree social work experience.
• Licensure at the Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) level in Massachusetts.
• Comprehensive clinical experience with particular emphasis on the provision of evidence‑based treatment of group treatment (such as DBT), acute care and crisis intervention.
• Demonstrated skill and knowledge of the field of skills‑based group treatment (current research, best practices, standards, professional organizations, etc.), particularly in college‑aged and campus populations.
• Extensive skills evaluating complex cases, triaging patients, addressing crises in the campus community, and working collaboratively on a team.
• Interdisciplinary experience.
• Demonstrated competency working with clients from diverse ethnic, racial, and socio‑economic backgrounds.
• Well‑versed in short‑term treatment interventions.
• Comfortable with high acuity and ability to excel in fast‑paced environments.
• Ability for autonomous clinical practice, community outreach, and working in complex systems, as some evening and rotating on‑call hours are required.
